I bought this and its bigger brother the ITB version to do the same thing but now they do two different jobs and am delighted to say they do both jobs very well indeed.
I bought the 500GB to back up my PC after a disastrous failure of the mother board which cost £££s to repair and more ££s to recover my data from the hard disc. I Used the Widows built in back up and stored it on the 500GB but the way Widows does this meant that the Buffalo was full with data, ISO images and all sorts of stuff I don't really understand and Windows kept generating incomprehensible error reports. So I bought the ITB Buffalo and used that instead and now all is well I'm happy and so it seems is Windows
For a while the 500GB sat forlornly, staring at me reproachfully, after all it was not it's fault that it had been consigned to the ever growing pile of superseded and unwanted tech that I seem to accumulate. Then necessity found a job for it. I had been (and continue ) to have problems with my WDTV Live streamer (see my review). I decided to connect the 500 GB to the WDTV and use it as local storage rather than always using my network with which WDTV has problems (they don't get on at all and sulk and sometimes refuse to talk). Connecting the drive has worked around these problems I can now watch whatever I want providing I transfer it to the hard drive via my PC .
Transfer rates are fast enough for me a HD movie will take about 3-4 mins at (Windows says) 10-11MBps
To summarise: these drives are efficient and look rather cool too. Buy them BUT buy the biggest capacity available the 500 Gb is already starting to get full it seems to have slowed down a little as a consequence and is looking fearfully at the dead tech pile while I am counting my pennies to buy another 1TB. Again; not the drive's fault digital content seems to just get bigger and bigger with constant advances.
