This Amazon basics backpack compares well. Material construction and design initially looks even better. Inside there are four larger double zipped compartments, 2 with dividers, 1 has a securing clip for keys, and a small zipped pouch, so large I keep forgetting wear I've put everything. It is also comfortable on the back and not externally much larger.
However, it does miss the securing strap for the laptop (though my 15inch fits neatly into a padded area which keeps it off the bottom of the pack (unlike the Targus), a mobile phone pouch on the shoulder strap, and side pockets (has narrow mesh instead).
Even though the bag is advertised as one that can carry a 17" laptop, there is no way on earth it was designed for it. As you can see in the pictures, the only way of getting the laptop into the slot is with a lot of stretching and force. When you do get it in, you are unable to close the bag and either way you have the two corners of the laptop pointing out like Santas elves ears. I personally wouldn't want any of my laptop pointing out in case it's damaged while in the bag (assuming you are able to close it).
I can't comment much about the quality as I haven't used it, however by touching it does feel OK at most. Its not flimsy, but it aint as padded as one would hope. For general lugging school/college/uni/hogwarts equipment its not bad, but may be on the big side.
Personally I'm returning it as the whole reason of buying it was for my 17" laptop, which as I've mentioned, is no where near the capacity it can hold (15.6" would be perfect, but then again the width of the bag might cause it to move around. There also isn't a strap to hold down a laptop inside.)
The bad points.
I always try to list bad points first, because if I don't, they are likely to be missed if my review is too long, and it also enables busy folks to quickly learn of any potential pitfalls before they too purchase it. :)
Her 17" laptop did NOT fit! OK, it did physically get in the rucksack, in the correct compartment - and the zip could be closed - but closing the zip was a real struggle - a two-handed operation, and it felt as though I was overly forcing the zip beyond what was comfortable. I just felt that by doing this, the zip would fail in very short order, rendering the rucksack useless. Therefore, in our specific requirement, we feel this rucksack wasn't fit for her 17" lappy. I think the reason for this non-fitment of 17" lappies is due to the design of the rucksack - its two sides are not parallel, they both lean in towards the top of the rucksack - giving the top of the rucksack a kind of arched design, rather than say a squared off design which might be more suitable for large laptops.
Other bad points we can think of. The inside of the back surface (the face which contacts your back) appears to be internally reinforced with some kind of heavy duty cardboard or other similar board.Read more ›
Not only the capacity has outshone my previous bags, however the durability, for the price I cannot believe how perfect it’s remained in the original condition. Usually, tears and thread coming out of place will happen in the first couple of weeks, but this has lasted without a single issue for a whole semester.
Because the bag has so many compartments I tend to use this bag for almost everything now and just leave stuff in its “place”. Maybe take out a textbook or notepad every now and then. But All the essentials such as pens, charger, drink etc etc I always have on me and even used it as a bag for hand luggage, holding enough belongings for 3 nights.
There are a few issues with the backpack I must admit. I feel more could be done to protect the laptop, only having a thin layer of what feels like cardboard protecting it. However I’ve been very careless with my bag on multiple occasions and no harm has come to any of the belongings inside of the bag.Read more ›
