I am wise enough to know that in photography most beginners believe a very cheap, very basic tripod is all they need. Only to purchase another tripod when it is clear that it is not up to the job. I therefore, focused on a tripod that was around £50 and had good reviews. When it arrived it was as I expected. It was reasonably heavy...it would be noticeable if carrying on a long walk. But the flip side is that it feels sturdy enough so that it would stay upright should it be a breezy day.
The clips used to secure the height of the legs seem secure. People below 5'8" or so will get away with only having to adjust one section in each leg due to the additional height the piston grip provides.
Some 'purists' are against piston grips, favouring the standard ball head grips that many come with. However, (and maybe still with my 'ignorance is bliss' glasses on) it feels incredibly solid and secure, and very easy to manoeuvre when used with my Nikon D5200 along with either 35mm or 18-105mm zoom. One feature that I seen as a 'must have' was a detachable plate. If you are a serious photographer and are out on a shoot that combines on and off tripod snaps then this is essential. It has 2 plates which is Ideal if you have 2 cameras or even a large telephoto/zoom that attaches directly to the tripod.
In summary...yes, you can buy a carbon fibre tripod that will last 30 years and is the only choice for 'the professional'. You may pay 5 or 6 times the cost of this tripod. For me, this is a great choice for someone who knows they need a tripod to take serious photos, who doesn't want to spend the same amount that their camera cost, and who knows that buying the absolute cheapest is the same as throwing money away!
For those like myself who are seeking a cheaper way to tripod nirvana, I have some good news: this Amazon tripod could be – just could be – a credible competitor to the Sirui, but only if you can compromise a little. The price is less than a third of the Sirui, the carbon fibre legs are light and rigid and the leg locks seem to be positive and reliable, what more could you ask? Well actually there is a bit of an issue here.
The ball head is OK, but disproportionately heavy at 300 g; and the QR plate was made in the general spirit of the Arca Swiss standard, not the actual dimensions. Arca Swiss plates from other sources just will not fit – this may or may not be a deal breaker.
It feels as if the Amazon guys, having scored the big selling point of carbon fibre legs, got the assembly down to their desired price point by skimping on the head.
The head, of course, can be swapped, and if like me you have an alternative lightweight, good-quality head, the resulting combination can be very very good. If you have to buy another head, the bargain price no longer looks such a bargain.
So basically it's a good buy at the price, and if you can afford to swap out the head and use a lighter one it's even better.
