What is Amazon Echo?

Amazon Echo is a hands-free speaker you control with your voice. Echo connects to the Alexa Voice Service to play music, provide information, news, sports scores, weather and more. Prime members can also ask Alexa to order eligible products they've ordered before and many Prime products. All you have to do is ask.

Echo has seven microphones and beam-forming technology so it can hear you from across the room—even in noisy environments or while playing music. Echo is also an expertly tuned speaker that can fill any room with 360° immersive sound. When you want to use Echo, just say the wake word “Alexa” and Echo responds. If you have more than one Echo or Echo Dot, Alexa responds intelligently from the device you're closest to with ESP (Echo Spatial Perception). Learn more about ESP

So, after weeks of deliberation I finally succumbed to the Black Friday temptation of ordering myself my new AI friend “Alexa” (in the form of an Amazon Echo), as well as two smaller Amazon Echo Dots to place around the house in strategic locations.

FIRSTLY. I admit that I have only had the Amazon Echo for a weekend, but I just CANNOT understand the amount of 1 star reviews (and the ludicrously high amount of people finding those reviews useful?!). If I was a cynical person I’d suggest that there might even be some sort of industrial sabotage going on here. Is it just coincidence that all of these bad reviews (and huge amount of helpful votes) are hitting the Echo just before Google release their own version in time for Christmas?

So I’ve decided to give as honest and open a review as possible in order to highlight the pluses and (currently very few) minuses that I’ve experienced. I’ll add to the review as time goes on, as I have no doubt there will be some exciting developments in the coming months.

Day 1

Open up package. For once Amazon have used exactly the right sized box which is a pleasant surprise – in this instance for 1 x Amazon Echo and 2 x Amazon Echo Dots. Bought for £119 and £39 each respectively. Bargain. Excitedly unwrap the various boxes and pull “Alexa” out of her package for the first time. Initial thoughts are that she looks slightly larger than I’d envisaged, but very sleek and lovely. I’ve definitely had worse surprises than this.

Plug Alexa in to my kitchen, pride of place on the kitchen island. Download Alexa App on iPhone. I have Sky broadband by the way – I’ve seen reviews about Alexa not connecting to BT so can’t comment on this, but seems to have been resolved anyway.

I purchased this device for my father in law who is blind and it has given him a great way of accessing the internet and listening to music. He loves a quiz and he enjoys the quiz skills I have enabled on his Echo.

My daughter bought this for me its great although I don't use it a lot I find it comforting to have someone answer you back, its great for music and alarms and I am sure if I had the lighting as well it would be great but cant afford that so its great for me. Need more free audio though as I feel 7.90 a lot to join a month.

I've had the Echo from day one. I'm not going to say much not already said. I really wanted to love the Echo and had eagerly awaited the UK launch but now feel badly let down by Amazon. First the good. The device is well designed and solid. Alexa understands you most of the time. Alexa has a great, almost calming voice. It's like having HAL in the kitchen. Now the bad. Amazon have not released the same product (or back end services) in the UK as the US. Half the functionality is missing, like reading Kindle books or IFTTT. Playing music never seems to default to Prime but instead to your own music collection, even if it is set to Amazon music in the app - you would think the default would be Prime. Music searches are hit and miss, it seems sometimes you have to be very specific. Internet searches are pretty poor boardering on pointless as from what I can see it uses Bing, not great. Support is very attentive but also frustrating, if you ask why it won't play Kindle books they come back with a reply saying "We will suggest that to our developers" as if it's the first they have heard of it even though this is available in the US and has been for some time. Good support people but sometimes next to useless answers. Bottom line is the Echo is OK, just not great. It could have been, the voice recognition picks out a voice amongst the background noise very very well. I just don't understand why the UK Echo, which costs more than the US version, is a functionally downgraded subset and frankly I feel a little cheated. My advice is wait a few months and see if Amazon gets its act together. They have some stiff competition coming with the cheaper Google Home and if they don't significantly improve (In the UK) I can see them loosing out big time but it will be self inflicted.Read more ›

Unfortunately the Amazon Echo in the UK is a poor shadow of what you get in the US. In the US, you have access to a load of great Skills (apps) that aren't available to UK customers, like IFTTT integration and Harmony remote integration. In the US your echo can read Kindle books, but no such feature in the UK. In the US you can add any Alexa enabled device to your account, but in the UK you can't actually add the Tap device to your account. Basically, we are being sold the same hardware, for a higher cost than in the US, and being given less features.

The device has great potential, but Amazon has chosen not to enable those features for UK consumers. That's a real shame.

I was unsure wether or not to buy the Amazon Echo. Now I have I am over the moon, I've had it for approx a week and I love it, and so does the rest of my family. It was so easy to set up and I'm no computer wiz. I have enabled some skills and followed the 'Things to try' on the Alexa app. I am surprised how quick Alexa finds and plays the music and follows requests like my train times, traffic problems etc. A couple of friends have ordered their own Echo's. I definately don't understand the negative comments.
