Having purchased an Amazon Echo as a birthday present for my wife, it came as a great surprise to both of us, as we had not realised exactly how versatile it would prove to be.

The initial impression was that it was packaged very cleverly indeed and when extracted from the box, the weightiness came as something of a surprise, too. Personally, I like speakers to be reasonably sturdy and weighty and have often associated this with good sonic attributes, especially in terms of bass response.

How to request information from Alexa requires a certain amount of trial and error and it is helpful, when using the associated (Alexa) app, to be able to establish more detail about questions asked. The app is also quick to enlarge upon aspects of use which were not successful and which may require a different approach next time. In addition, it is useful to view the app and establish more detail about different albums associated with music choices or to find a more detailed reference to local weather or access to the BBC News app for instance.

Overall this is one of those life-changing gadgets that appears once in a harvest moon and offers a different level of technological capability to what has been experienced before.

So, after weeks of deliberation I finally succumbed to the Black Friday temptation of ordering myself my new AI friend “Alexa” (in the form of an Amazon Echo), as well as two smaller Amazon Echo Dots to place around the house in strategic locations.

FIRSTLY. I admit that I have only had the Amazon Echo for a weekend, but I just CANNOT understand the amount of 1 star reviews (and the ludicrously high amount of people finding those reviews useful?!). If I was a cynical person I’d suggest that there might even be some sort of industrial sabotage going on here. Is it just coincidence that all of these bad reviews (and huge amount of helpful votes) are hitting the Echo just before Google release their own version in time for Christmas?

So I’ve decided to give as honest and open a review as possible in order to highlight the pluses and (currently very few) minuses that I’ve experienced. I’ll add to the review as time goes on, as I have no doubt there will be some exciting developments in the coming months.

Day 1

Open up package. For once Amazon have used exactly the right sized box which is a pleasant surprise – in this instance for 1 x Amazon Echo and 2 x Amazon Echo Dots. Bought for £119 and £39 each respectively. Bargain. Excitedly unwrap the various boxes and pull “Alexa” out of her package for the first time. Initial thoughts are that she looks slightly larger than I’d envisaged, but very sleek and lovely. I’ve definitely had worse surprises than this.

Plug Alexa in to my kitchen, pride of place on the kitchen island. Download Alexa App on iPhone. I have Sky broadband by the way – I’ve seen reviews about Alexa not connecting to BT so can’t comment on this, but seems to have been resolved anyway.

Where do I start? I thought it would be fun but didn't realise just how much! I've only had it a week but it has already become a much loved friend. I've used it to play music, games, tell me jokes, insult me, pay me compliments, give me news headlines, weather, random facts, put me through a workout, read me an audio book. And more. The list of Echos skills is very long. The Echo has terrific sound quality for playing music and its great that you can pair your phone via Bluetooth and play content from that. I've not tried it out for recipes yet or for shopping and to do lists and I don't have any smart home appliances. I'm already thinking I'll miss the Echo when I'm away from home so I may have to buy a dot which would be very portable although I understand the music sound quality would be inferior. I couldn't have afforded to treat myself at full price but on Prime day it was almost half price, enabling me to take the plunge. Love it!

I received my Echo with some excitement. I must admit that I had been swayed by the excellent Prime Day pricing and probably would not have ventured into this otherwise. I am glad that I did though! I am impressed that Alexa (though I have called mine Echo as I know my wife wouldn't like being spoken to by someone called Alexa and I think that pieces of electronic equipment can't have personalities ;-) ) is pretty good at interpreting what I want to do. She / it does get it wrong at times - playing rather garish renderings of Beethoven's 5th symphony by some hyped up group or other - rather than a more appropriate Classical rendering, but hey, with the addition of a Playlist to my 'Unlimited Music' subscription I can choose exactly what I want her / it to play. So there are workarounds once you understand the way it works.
I agree with some that the fun might wear off after a while, but there are some features that I really like. The ease of being able to come in and immediately command some light background music after a hard day's work is one of them. And with my Unlimited subscription I can just choose anything I fancy. (To those who complain that Echo is rubbish because there is a limited choice of music I say, 'You get what you pay for'. One can't expect free music - after all, the musicians need to be fed! It also links to Spotify too).
I particularly like the way in which Echo connects to 'smart devices' such as switches - I have invested in a couple of TP Link three pin plugs - one with Energy monitoring and the other just a simple switch. They work well with Echo and are a boon when you enter a dark bedroom and just want to switch on your bedside light which is 3m away. (You need an Echo or Echo dot within hearing range of course).
