Other than that the reader is very light, responsive and super comfortable to hold. I'm going to try for a couple of days more and then decide whether to keep it or return.
Amazon has sent me a replacement, the screen of the second oasis is miles better. Photo of both devices side by side attached.
On a plus side most of Amazon after sales support has been good, a few of their operators really need to have more training on the technical specifications of these units and when replacement are sent they REALLY should have the latest OS installed not an OS that was installed June 2016!!! If, like me you have no laptop or computer and work purely from tablets you are in trouble, as apparently this is not normal and you cannot do the required updates (3 weeks of my life I will never get back getting that issue resolved)
Until the battery life lives up to the promised duration I would avoid these readers, save your money and buy the Paperwhite
First:this version of Kindle looks, and feels, subtly more high quality. The almost square shape seems as if the screen sould be smaller than the Voyage /Paperwhite , but this is not the case. The bezel has been narrowed, top and bottom, by moving a good portion of the power pack to the detachable battery/cover.
The result is an almost postcard size, with a very noticeable reduction in weight when used with the cover removed-which I now do automatically-when using the device. Removal/attachment is a simple and easy one-click operation.
The reading experience is what we have come to expect from generation Kindle, pretty flawless really.
I now prefer the return of the two forward/return buttons on the bezel edge:these can be set to individual preference and will automatically adjust position for right or left-handed readers.
The light weight makes this so comfortable to use.
Second:the elephant in the room - Price! This is expensive when the same reading experience can be had on the Voyage /Paperwhite. But, IMHO, the quality feel, the really compact size, the hugely extended power life and the 'je ne sais quoi' factor, coupled with the really comfortable feel in the hand, makes this the one to go for if your resources can stretch to it.
Verdict:another advanced winner from Amazon.
P. S. I am a private buyer, not a product tester.
PPS. This will reduce the aftermarket sales of cheap 'Kindle' covers!!
I have had nearly all the Kindles - the Keyboard, the Paperwhite, the Voyage and now the Oasis. Obviously each one was perfect in its own right, when I first bought them, but they have been tweaked over the years and I think this one is the best so far in my opinion. The size is what immediately grabbed my attention, I know there isn't a massive deal of difference but it just feels so much smaller, probably because it is squarer and also so incredibly light. And that is probably the best part of it, the lightness. You could (and I do!) read for hours without having wrist-ache. I always kind of propped the bottom of my Voyage on my little finger whilst holding it as it was heavier and after a while reading it starting slipping out of my hand. The Oasis is so easy to switch from hand to hand with the new automatic page rotation and extremely comfortable to hold without feeling like you might drop it when you get tired. The slightly rubberised back which houses the battery is perfect for gripping it and feeling secure.
Cover-wise I have the walnut leather cover and again I love it! It is suede and so does mark slightly, but that is all part of its appeal and, as I read in a review somewhere and totally agree with, you just want to keep stroking it, it's so soft!Read more ›

Lost my Paperwhite on the plane. Glad I did, as I replaced it with this. A delight to read and hold: much clearer and much smaller. Verging on work of art: a lovely thing to have.Published 17 hours ago by Mr. Stephen R. Bates
A very big mistake to choose this as a cover for my new Oasis. It is a type of 'Suede' leather which marks easily and colour fades quickly. Had to purchase a black leather version. Read morePublished 18 hours ago by Mr J Whytock
I am very pleased with this purchase. The battery life is not as good as claimed but can be increased by switching to airplane mode. I'm glad I bought it. Read morePublished 18 hours ago by PHILIP JOHN BOLE
