My wife has had a fire phone for about a year or so. I have not had any use of this as its hers. However on a recent trip to a London I used my sony xperia z1 to find my way around. I was disappointed in the phone(after about 3 years) as the battery ran out. So I used the wife's fire phone . Battery lasted well. In fact I charged mine every day, she charged hers once on the 3rd day.

So I had a little play and compared it to my phone the sony ( expensive) , Camera, just as good, Battery life, better, usability, OK once you get used to it. Major drawback the apps I use. Not a problem, I found a website that shows exactly what to do to load google play store. With this knowledge I purchased the phone new for £89.99 . A bargain. Installed google play store ( simple) and downloaded all my apps. Great.
Would recommend the phone , but there is a drawback that is a bit of an embarrassment for amazon. I tried to download my music unlimited app. Unfortunately the device ( Amazons Own Phone and operating system ) is not compatible. I touched base with amazon and there answer is that I ma correct.. The phone will not download their own app for music unlimited. Plays on every other device, Windows, tablets, Iphone etc but not theirs.
So anybody that is buying a new phone ( they are still for sale on ebay, debenhams etc.) remember they are no longer updating their own software.

I'd been wondering about getting this phone for some time as my Nexus 4 was over 2 years old and lacked 4G functionality, but I was put off by the £299 normal price and lack of a standard android build. And I couldn't justify the price of a new Nexus, either. But I did some soul-searching about whether I actually needed all the features of a Nexus, and whether I needed any apps that weren't in the Amazon app store - the result being that I felt I could live with the Amazon version of android, but I was still put off by the price tag of the Fire phone. However, the recent £99 offer clinched the deal for me so I bought a Fire phone and have just sold my Nexus 4 privately - the net result being that I was only out of pocket by about £20, which I thought was an excellent deal.

After using the Fire phone for a week or so I can now say that I'm very happy with the purchase - the interface did take quite a lot of effort to get used to as I found it substantially different to what I was used to with the Nexus, but I persisted and can now do everything I need to with little effort. The Amazon help is good, but I learned quite a lot more from a neat little website called - especially tips for sideloading apps that are not available in the Amazon app store. By way of an example, I use the Ucam247 ip home cctv cameras and view these through the Ucam247Live android app - this isn't available on the Amazon app store, but I obtained an apk from Ucam247 (great support from this company, by the way) and sideloaded it onto my Fire phone - it works fine, apart from seeing the occasional Google Services warning (which doesn't appear to affect the functionality).

This phone is awesome at what it does. It's not an Android phone (well it is, but not really coz Amazon have skinned all the Google out of it). Neither is it an iOS phone nor a windows phone. So if you're expecting standard features on any of those 3 platforms (Google, Apple or Microsoft) you're gonna be out of luck. But here are the upsides...

First, you get to *download* your free Prime movies and TV shows to watch whenever you like. That is a huge upside for me. Second, the apps I actually need (Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, Twitter, BBC iPlayer, etc) are all included for free on the Amazon Appstore. Third, the headphones are actually rather good - and unlike other Android phones, they include volume controls. Finally, if you like games you'll appreciate the processor speed. It's impressive.

As a phone, it works perfectly well. Physically it feels like a high quality piece of tech in the hand. All my contacts imported quickly and easily from my Google accounts. Calls and SMS work perfectly. Sound quality is good - especially with the headphones. The speakers on the actual phone are pretty poor, but hopefully you'll have little need to use them.

So what's not to like? Well, all the Google goodies are missing - Gmail app, Google Maps, Google Authenticator (yes I need that), Google Drive, Youtube, Hangouts (although Skype works well). Curiously another downside of this phone is that the Kindle app is actually worse than you get on any modern Google Android phone. For real. How is that possible? Weird huh?

Basically I use this phone as a "fun phone" for all my media needs. My serious phone is a Google Nexus 4 for everything else.

When I recently decided that I needed a new phone, I considered the Amazon Fire. I have a Kindle Fire already and it was very attractive to link up the two devices – allowing me to utilise the audio books, kindle books, etc that I already have in my cloud. The phone itself looks like any other smart phone in design – it is quite sturdy and comes with charger and earphones. Like all Amazon devices it is extremely easy to set up – I just linked it to my WiFi and I had everything that was available on my Kindle Fire on here and ready to use. So, if you are not familiar with smart phones and can use a Kindle Fire, this may be a great alternative for you, as it is no more difficult to use than your Kindle.

In a sense, the minus side of this phone is also what will be the plus side for so many people, in that it is tied in to Amazon. It has to be said that, if you are not an Amazon Prime member, and use Amazon rarely, this will probably not fulfil your requirements. This does not offer the same amount of apps, etc, as an iPhone for example and you are tied in to what you can already purchase on Amazon as well as being tied into the O2 network. These are obviously things that you have to take into account as they may be an issue for you. As other reviewers have rightly pointed out, many apps you can download to other phones (such as UK banking apps) are simply not compatible with this. I am happy enough with those on offer, but I think this could be a real issue for some people and it might be worth seeing what is available in the Amazon store before committing yourself.
