I really do love my Alexa, ask her to set an alarm, tell you a joke, play your favourite radio channel or playlist, the things you can ask her to do are endless.
I was a little concerned buying the dot that the speaker wouldn’t be of sufficient quality, but for me it is ideal - if not, you can hook her up to anything else with a audio port.
Great value, great fun and a great assistant, will definitely be purchasing more for other rooms in my house and also ivestigating lights etc to make my home smart, Alexa has convinced me this is the way forward.
Seriously do not think you will be disappointed, these things are most definitely the future.
I have it connected to our heating (Nest), music (Sonos) and a fan (Dyson). Seems to work great most the time.
Original review below:
[Worked great for a few days. Now it won't talk to the Sonos any more for some things. Most things work fine but it simply won't play on certain speakers despite confirming that it has heard and understood.
I have tried all sorts of things to fix the problem but nothing works. If it wasn't for the fact I got it half price thanks to a Sonos voucher I would have sent it back. Luckily (for now at least) it is still on speaking terms with the Nest.]
I use alexa for, news in the morning, radios for my dohd while I am away, weather updates for the week ahead, sport scores film the weekend, and timers while I am cooking.
It is fantastic. Following an American recipe? "Alexa, how many grams in 8oz" and you instantly get an answer.
I am amazed at how quick the response time is.
Your can also all alexa to play you music, but the library is limited. You can sign up to Amazon music however for full access to the library. However if you have 2 echo devices you can only play music from Amazon on one device at a time. You are able to play radio on one and music on the other.
Sadly the Music Group feature lacks what Sonos can do, whereby you can only join your Alexa to just 1 music group, meaning if your like me and you wanted to setup multiple music groups, for example one for all speakers around the house and then separate ones for upstairs and downstairs, then sorry you'll be disappointed. Having said that, this is not what the primary function of Alexa is for.
This unit is best for connecting to an external amp either via a cable (normal headphone jack) or via Bluetooth because it's built in speaker is pretty basic and doesn't have much quality to it. If you connect a cable then it cuts off the built in speaker, which sometimes isn't always helpful. For example if you connect this to your PC's Line-In so that you use your PC's speakers, then when the PC is off the Dot is then mute.
Also be aware if you connect via Bluetooth then you can't link another Bluetooth device or use the Music Group functions.
The ability for all the Alexa products to hook into external content is very good. I use LightwaveRF products and Alexa works very well for the Gen 1 LightwaveRF devices I have. It's very easy to link Alexa to 3rd party applications too via the skills section of the Alexa app or via the Alexa website.
Overall summary of this product I would say a good 4 out of 5, with the only reason for not getting 5 stars is the lacking of the multi-music group functionality and that your can;t configure the built in speaker to not shut off if you connect the audio out cable.
The one we have at the moment is in the lounge and I'm thinking about getting another one for the kitchen, so I can set timers and listen to music whilst cooking without having to run it through the soundbar as the Mrs would probably be watching TV. The two things I didn't even think about when purchasing, but have subsequently come in very handy are the shopping list and the todo list features, think of something tell Alexa and bam it's on your phone, nifty.
Let's hope Amazon keep updating and improving it and who knows what it will be capable of in the future.
