From tree to bottle, it takes over two years to create each bottle of Amarula Cream Liqueur. The key ingredient, the marula fruit, is considered one of Africa's botanical treasures. This exotic fruit, harvested by hand, gives Amarula its distinctive taste and smooth, rich texture. The tree grows naturally across sub-equatorial Africa and this is where the magical Amarula story starts.
This rare tree cannot be cultivated and the marula fruits are only selected when they are perfectly ripe and yellow. The mash from the fruit then travels 2,000kms to the cellar in Stellenbosch. The fruit is made into a wine and then double-distilled and left to mature in oak barrels for two years, before being blended with fresh cream.

From the manufacturer
Amarula, the original Marula-based alcoholic drink, was first launched as a clear spirit in 1983. In September 1989, cream was added to the Marula-based spirit changing it to a cream liqueur. Amarula Cream is the only cream liqueur which uses real Marula fruit, harvested from Marula trees that grow wild and uncultivated in the subequatorial regions of Africa – the only place on the entire planet where they grow. The trees bear their fruit just once a year at the end of Africa’s summer, which scent attracts the elephants from the surrounding areas that come to feast on the fruit.
Amarula is a cream liqueur, based on the spirit derived from the Marula. The new bottle design celebrates the brands most prolific icon, the African elephant, in a more evocative way. The new bottle shape is called ‘Jabulani’, which is Zulu for ‘rejoice’. The inspiration for the name stems from the story of a rescued orphan elephant, named Jabulani that was successfully reintroduced into the wild by South African Conservationists.
The Amarula Trust
Amarula and the elephants are intimately connected through our African roots and the Marula fruit. This is why the Amarula Trust was created in 2002 with the aim to safeguard the African elephants In 2016, the Amarula Trust formed a partnership with the CEO, Dr Paula Kahumbu, of Wild Life Direct with the shared vision to drive conservation through education. With less than 400 000 elephants left in the world, and their numbers decreasing at an alarming rate, we are going to work together to help protect our elephants and safeguard our heritage – so that in the years to come we can continue meeting them beneath the Marula trees.
In 2017, the 'Name Them Save Them Campaign' global campaign was launched. Visit the Amarula website and you can select, design and name your own elephant. Once you have named and designed your elephant the Amarula Trust will donate 1 USD to Wildlife Direct for every elephant that is shared on Social Media.
