The acoustic playing on this reminds me of Charlie Byrd. So controlled, such quality. Along with the accompaniment of the trumpet it is excellent. I fist heard at a French friends house in the middle of the countryside at a barbecue on a hot summer's evening. Takes me back, even in the middle of a cold rainy winter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bringing Quiet Joy 7 Sept. 2012
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is an album of improvisation and of rich beauty and gentleness. Although a duo, Ablaye Cissoko, the Senegelese kora player and vocalist, is the leader and song composer. The muted trumpet work of Volker Goetze mainly adds contrasting timbre and supports the kora with phrases to emphasize the melodies. He at times does some more extensive riffs. Goetze's other role is music arranger. The distinction of track 4, Silo, is that Goetze opens with a solo improvisation and that percussion is provided by Joe Quitzke; it is the only fast and rhythmic piece. The album is enhanced with a nicely crafted 5-minute video of the tune and country Haiti (hear track 6) that was excerpted from the documentary film Griot. The trumpet is an asset to the album, enriching it with the upper register, highlighting melodic phrases, and breaking any sonic tedium. Listening to the soft vocals and the river of notes from the kora will lighten your spirits and bring quiet joy. My only negative is that, with the exception of track 4, the tone is the same throughout, and if the album were to be extended beyond its 43 minutes, tedium would probably occur. Similar collaborations have been heard before in Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Segal's Chamber Music and to some extent with Toumani Diabate and Ballake Sissoko's New Ancient Strings, but this album is a sweeter wine.
5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting blend of African kora and vocal, and Western jazz trumpet 6 Aug. 2013
By Paul L. Laclair - Published on Amazon.com

What a spectacular disc this is! Volker Goetze's trumpet provides a haunting and empathetic counterpoint to Ablaye Cissoko's kora and vocals. This is what world fusion music should be: a blend of influences from different cultures without a hint of self-consciousness or pretense. This music simply is. On this soft summer night of my listening, the effect is magical, and I have no doubt that this album will provide many rewards for many other occasions. The only disappointment is the timing at only 42 minutes - but then if you're anything like me, you'll probably want to play it at least twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, exotic, soothing... 3 Mar. 2013

If you want to inject some tranquillity into your day, listening to this music will make that possible. The kora player and singer is completely at one with his art and it shows. The trumpet and flugelhorn artist has added a beautiful warmth with his empathetic and sensitive interplay in a style not intrinsic to his jazz bachground but wonderfully rendered here. My wife listens to this whenever she practices her Japanese calligraphy and she says it puts her in the perfect frame of mind for such an endeavor.

We heard this CD while browsing in a favorite gallery (Shaw Cramer in Vineyard Haven). We loved it. The gentle juxtaposition of cool trumpet and complex African guitar drew us in and we ordered copies for ourselves and friends.

I heard a selection from this album on NPR and was immediately interested in the music. I am not disappointed. I find the instrumentals to be unique and evocative.
