The foot stirrups help to keep them from riding up or showing your socks/ankles. There is also some reflective trim and an overly long draw string which I trimmed with scissors.
Note: I bought the XXL and I'm 6ft 2 and around 17 stone. They fitted well, even with my cycling shorts underneath. Plenty long enough. I recommend these for the depths of winter though and they are probably too warm any other time. You may feel a bit too warm like I did when wearing these with padded shorts underneath in temperatures around 10 degrees or above. Closer to freezing it is, the more you'll benefit from these thicker tights.
I took the plunge and after a quick postage, received the items in good order.
Since buying them, I have worn them through a variety of weather conditions and can confirm they are warm to wear when the temperature dips to single figures, they are water repellent with drops 'beading' on the surface so they can be brushed off and they are, indeed very comfortable when on. I've not been caught in a ful deluge yet though!
My only criticism is that I was disappointed with the fit - I bought the XXL (told you I was portly at 38") for waist size but also I assumed for leg length - being 6' 6" tall I struggle to find bike clothes that fit well - but my issue with these trousers/leggings/tights is that they are around 4" too short in the leg (I am a 36" inside leg by the way!) whilst the seating area is overly long - I appreciate that they are intended to be worn 'high waisted" but the short (on me) leg length means that the elasticity of the fabric gradually pulls the waist band downwards resulting in a crotch about 4 inches lower than it should be, this happens even when on my bike which means some undiginified hitching of clothes at strategic stop-points.
So for this reason alone, they drop a star in my review - if Altura - you offer a choice of leg length please let me know! Or maybe this is something to consider for the future?
But, to summarise, a great product unless you are a weird non-average shape!
