"Nature doesn't feel the pain inflicted upon her by humans. I do!" Kveldulf Gunnar Larsson
The Alternative of Real Ecology directs readers to derive their own conclusion from a work that mostly suggests what is impossible. With real-world logic, this book reveals the paradoxes of human approaches to environmentalism, showing how almost all of our approaches are based on our needs and not those of nature. It then presents a series of thought-experiments which force the reader to independently reach conclusions about what must be done. At its core, this book suggests that normal (modern) human life and environmental survival are opposites, and so humans must become "inhuman" or conditioned to assign no additional weight to human preferences. In this mindset, we are able to separate what we need from what we want; at that point, the solutions to overpopulation, overconsumption and other human ills become obvious. The author sets a mindset of "no contribution" more as a thought experiment and baseline than recommendation, but comparison to it reveals how impoverished our "green" actions have been. In this way, The Alternative of Real Ecology acts like any form of radical realism. It identifies causes, and looks to their effects, and illustrates for us the choices we have regarding the inevitability of those effects. Its "inhuman" outlook separates us from illusion, and opens the dialogue to a results-oriented conception of environmentalism. In turn, this pushes the human dialogue on the environment past the socially-acceptable to the realistic.

Larsson should have written the book in his native Norwegian and hoped it was translated. I don't even know if that would have helped since it is unstructured and redundant but it would have avoided gaffes like 'detergent' for 'deterrent'. I am sure there are valid points hidden in the verbiage but I couldn't find them.
Heady environmentalism for the grim realist

We hear and read a lot about "environmentalism," but what can actually be done? The situation seems hopeless, and K.G. Larsson affirms that it is. The point of this book is to separate pleasant and ineffectual social chatter about environmental problems from a realistic and socially unpopular assessment of the problem. I was fortunate to read an advance copy and was impressed by how it broke down the environmental question into its constituent issues and addressed each, debunking the myths and distractions that saturate our media. This book is a good introduction for someone who has found contemporary environmental and primitivist literature to be lacking, and is looking for a way to remove the nonsense and focus on the actual problem: overpopulation, and a human refusal to put limits on ourselves.
