Product description

About the Author

James B Johnson, M.D., an instructor in plastic surgery in the U.S., retired after more than twenty years in private practice to pursue his long-time interest in alternate-day calorie restriction. After witnessing many of his patients struggle with their weight, he became committed to finding a way for them to achieve a healthy body weight and improve their health without the stress and difficulty of complying with traditional diets. He has since become one of the foremost innovators in this field, having published various scientific articles and also conducting the first study to show how alternate-day calorie restriction can treat disease. His book, The Alternate-Day Diet, is revolutionizing the way that people approach dieting, and offers insights into how alternate-day calorie restriction can prevent disease, increase energy, and slow the ageing process. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Although the book makes a lot of the science, it is useful advice. In some ways you can cut to the chase quickly as the diet is really simple. It is not widely known as, except for selling the book, there is no money to be made commercially. I have been on it for about 7 weeks and have lost about 20lbs. It has been easy too. You do not need to calorie count as such and can eat what you want, as normal, every other day. I ignored the advice to take to slimfast type shakes on the "down" days as the boredom, for me, would set in fast. I have a piece of fruit, a no fat 70 calorie yoghurt for breakfast, a piece of fruit for lunch and a small salad for dinner (lettuce, tomato, oily fish). Is it boring? Yes, it would be like all diets except that you are sustained by tomorrow it is back to normal eating. To suit what I was doing one week, I tried a "down day" two days running. it was fine, no great hunger panes. It is a diet you can switch on and off with ease without feeling you need to abandon it or losing the willpower. The book makes a lot of the science of switching on the starvation gene but while I cannot counter this, at its simplest it is about eating less and if you stick to it, 2 or 3 low calorie days in a week over the week say 25-35% calories overall less for the week. Its joy is it is doable for the long term. You look forward to tomorrow (the normal eating day) and the food then tastes great. It can be a little hard getting through the day, especially if other family members are eating tempting things, but you console yourself with "it is only for today" .On the normal day I do not have the urge to overeat but if I fancy a bowl of ice cream I have it (but not for the sake of it).

I recommend the book which gives you the belief in the science, even though it is so easy to grasp, but do recommend trying the diet

I've been on this diet now for 3 weeks (due to weigh again tomorrow) but I lost 5lbs in the first 2 weeks and I'm confident I've lost more, and virtually effortlessly! The book is very thorough if a little long winded on the science behind it, but I highly recommend it. Great service too, delivered quickly.

I have not finished reading this yet, but what I have read so far is very interesting and informative, and it is written in an easy way to read and understand, not too scientific. I am just starting this eating regime and have high hopes I will benefit from it. If it does what it says in the book, I should be a bundle of health in no time atall!

Someone has already stated one of the reasons that this diet is so brilliant and that is that apart from buying the book [and you don't really have to do that !]you don't have to buy any special equipment or foods. For every other day you have 5oo cals only but it is entirely up to you what those 500 calories consist of .The book recommends shakes but I don't like them but there are loads of soups that you could eat instead [I actually make my own meatless ,low calorie soups ]I also only do it Mon,Weds & Fri [which is approved of in the book ]but you do have to resist the temptation to fill up on your "feast" days [the "fast" days are easier because you know exactly what you must eat]But this diet isn't just about losing weight it is also about the health benefits so I would recommend getting the book so you are aware of what these are [there was a programme on BBC last year and the doctor presenting it tried a few diets based on extreme calorie restriction but it was this one that he decided to follow for the rest of his life. I am on it because my mum's life was cut short by numerous health problems [including diabetes] and I really believe that this diet will help me to avoid contracting diabetes. The fast days are a bit difficult to start with but you soon get used to them but the best bit is this is dieting ONE DAY AT A TIME !!What could be better than that ??!!

In two words : life-changing.
No amount of money could ever buy these benefits - and it's all for free.
Zero-intake fasting days are much easier than calorie-restriction, since the gastric juices do not flow - so there's no distracting hunger to deal with.
In fact, during fasting, blood-sugar rises - suppressing the appetite.

I've been ADFasting for 7 weeks and lost a stone.
It's been so easy, I haven't gotten near caving in once - even after consuming alcohol.

Benefits :
- Increased energy levels
- Increased stamina
- Early rising - plus I get up when I wake up rather than lying in bed, doing mental gymnastics
- Clear head and clearer thinking
- Increased alertness
- Emotional stability
- Greatly reduced CFS/ME symptoms

I haven't felt like this for a very long time indeed.
And the list of biological benefits just goes on and on.
My eating preferences have changed. I've lost the taste for carbs - particularly bread and lost my sweet tooth ... preferring to avoid the subsequent sleepiness induced by sugary foods.
And my energy levels are much more even.
In general, my tastes have become much more savoury and I really enjoy eating again.
I used to be "an eater" - and ADF has demonstrated the vital importance of fasting to good health - in particular, the avoidance of (auto-immune) inflammation issues.

Since the beginning, we've evolved alongside intermittent fasting and depend on it for good health.
Without it, our systems simply never get the opportunity to reboot and reset ... with consequent impacts on our health, compromising our ability to withstand internal and external biological stressors.
