Product Description

From the Back Cover

For the first time ever: a liberating guide to life and love that tells successful women that they can find the right partner without having to change or settle—and then shows them how to do it

In the twenty-first century, women are outpacing men in education and career advancement. Yet amazingly, successful women are constantly being told that their professional achievements might doom their chances of marriage and family.

Don't believe the alarmist, negative hype, advises top relationship therapist Dr. Sonya Rhodes. Data show that today's Alpha women—ambitious, self-assured, and hardworking—are hardly fated to be spinsters. On the contrary, by rethinking outmoded gender roles, women can have better relationships than ever before. A clinical psychologist with more than thirty years' experience, Dr. Rhodes shares her secrets to helping women triumph in love by finding men who will appreciate and complement their strengths.

Challenging gender stereotypes associated with the terms Alpha and Beta, she advises the Alpha woman to look past the overly competitive, domineering Alpha male for a man who is not threatened by her strengths but is communicative, responsible, and collaborative. Just as Alpha women aren't demanding bitches, Beta men aren't passive wimps. Demonstrating that nearly everyone is a combination of both qualities, Dr. Rhodes includes a comprehensive test to help readers define where they (and their partners) are on the Alpha-Beta spectrum. This tool will give women more options and help them make better choices.

More than just offering advice about romance, The Alpha Woman Meets Her Match explores the dramatic shifts in our culture, and how these can bring women greater empowerment in both their love lives and their careers.

Not as good as I expected. Lots of platitudes and it echoes other books written about relationships. The test does not convince me

HASH(0x8aff1a2c) out of 5 stars Slightly disappointed 16 May 2014
By Karla Sue Margeson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I was really excited to get this book. I fit the profile perfectly - "Just your typical strong, overachieving woman with boy problems" as the author says. And in that way, the book fit the bill. It accurately described many of the challenges I've faced in relationships, it encouraged me to own my power and strength (yay!) and it was easy to relate to the content.

But, disappointingly, I found it to be less of a book with logical advice about how to be successful in relationships and more a pitch for the author's particular way of thinking, which is that strong alpha women should always pair up with Beta men. There is no other alternative in the book. Alpha/alpha relationships are outwardly dismissed with little more than an unsubstantiated sentence claiming that they most frequently end in divorce. The rest of the book is a sales pitch for the supportive partnership of Betas along with instructions for finding, accepting, building a relationship with and ultimately marrying your Beta. So, if you're single or already attached to a Beta, this is a nice handbook articulating that scenario. But if you're struggling in an alpha/alpha relationship this book has absolutely no insights at all. Nor does it talk much about building skills that would allow us Alpha ladies greater flexibility and delicacy in relationships. I personally was looking for some development tips that would help me tread a little more lightly and establish closer, more successful partnerships with partners all across the alpha/beta spectrum. But I found no such insights here.

HASH(0x8aff1a80) out of 5 stars Makes Sense to a 20Something 15 April 2014
By Carroll M. Arbogast - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Even if you (like me) are wary of nonfiction about dating/relationships, Dr. Sonya Rhodes really seems to be on to something with "The Alpha Woman Meets Her Match." Her message to women is, essentially, that it's wrong to settle for a partner that doesn't complement your personality and your lifestyle. No one should should rush to couple up for the fear of it becoming "too late" to find the right person. Dr. Rhodes has created an evaluative quiz that measures up the ratio of "alpha" (dominant, assertive) and "beta" (more submissive and nurturing) qualities in your personality, and ventures that understanding those qualities is essential to a fulfilling relationship that is functional, loving, (and yes, sexual). Dr. Rhodes also dismisses the negativity surrounding the idea of an "Alpha Woman." Possessing Alpha traits does not make you less feminine or desirable, and vice-versa.

To any 20-something like myself, the idea that focusing on your career and your own life while you're young instead of feeling pressured to settle down "before all the good ones are gone" (ahem, Susan Patton) is very refreshing. Dr. Rhodes, a PhD and "Alpha Woman" herself, it seems, is quite confident that contrary to that, the most successful life partnerships are formed later in life. You don't lose out when you're 30, 40, or 50-- in fact, being more self-aware and confident, you're more likely to find the person who is truly right for you.

The anecdotes from Dr. Rhodes' experience as a marital counselor are informative and often very entertaining....and her message to "Alpha Woman" to not compromise themselves for anyone is inspiring. A great read.

HASH(0x8acf8f24) out of 5 stars So refreshing! 16 April 2014
By Sarah Carter - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I had come across the author on Huffington Post because there's been so much coverage recently about ambitious women and the changing dynamic in relationships that has resulted from the dynamic in the workplace. Everyone loves to talk about how it's hard for "strong" women to find a man, and we all wonder why and pose theories, but what I LOVE about this book is that it doesn't tell us NOT to be who we ARE. Instead of just whining, as some other recent books on the topic of powerful women in today's dating scene have done, this book actually offers real insight and advice about how to navigate romance when you're used to being in charge in the office. I find it liberating to strip "alpha" and "beta" of their gender cliches. Why should anyone consider me less feminine for being strong-willed? I think the change in our cultural mentality will take time, but it's a change that's only natural. How we work and function within relationships has nothing to do with our gender, it's personality, and for every personality there is a complimentary personality that makes a good relationship an actual possibility! Now I just need to meet the perfect guy, but this book taught me a lot about how to look for him, and who I should avoid...! Recommend it very much.

HASH(0x8aff1d08) out of 5 stars Pretty interesting read...but I can summarize this book in a paragraph 7 May 2014
By M Dub - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this book after my dad had forwarded me an article on the WSJ regarding Alpha women "marrying down". It was overall an interesting read, certainly addresses the issue of high-earning, powerhouse alpha females of this decade - the struggle of being the top dog in her career, and how that translates into relationships and so forth.

Main Takeaways:
1) Alpha/Beta qualities are on a continuum - it's a spectrum of qualities
2) High alpha matches better with a beta - who can be supportive of alpha ambitions without having a power struggle

Fun read - but it's not a book I would read over and over again.

HASH(0x8aff1ca8) out of 5 stars Uplifting 27 April 2014
By Grace Bennett - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I struggled the last seven years in a roller coaster relationship (was it even that?) with an Alpha "bad boy" guy. While all the highs were great, I was finally left a brokenhearted mess. I finally understand after taking the quiz and reading the rationale behind the authors' thesis, why he was, plain and simple, the wrong choice for me from the get go--if I ever hope to settle into a mutually supportive relationship, and I do. Thank you to Sonya Rhodes and Susan Schneider for writing a book on why to look for love in all the beta places instead.
