Product Description

Product Description

Four of director Pedro Almodovar's acclaimed films. In 'The Flower of My Secret' (1995), a woman who lives a double life finds that being a successful romantic novelist does not necessarily bring happiness. Her husband does not love her, her best friend seems distracted and her mother and sister are too busy bickering to notice that anything is wrong. She stops writing and finds solace in the bottle but finds an unlikely rescuer putting her on a collision course to a new emotional entanglement. 'Kika' (1993) is a black comedy about a make-up artist and her relationship with a philandering American writer living in Madrid. Features the usual roster of Almodovar comic stalwarts such as a rapist-thief, a narcoleptic son, a roving camerawoman voyeur, a lesbian housemaid and various transexuals, serial killers, porn stars and drug addicts - all whisked up into a gloriously immoral frothy sex comedy. In 'Law of Desire' (1987), Antonio Banderas stars as the obsessive fan of gay director Pablo Quintero (Eusebio Poncela). Carmen Maura also stars as the director's lesbian sex-changed brother in this sex, drugs and murder romp through modern Madrid. Finally, in 'Matador' (1986), Diego (Nacho Martinez) is an ex-champion bullfighter who has retired early and now runs a bullfighting school; still looking to find a 'kick', he has taken to watching sadistic videos for sexual pleasure. Maria Cardenal (Assumpta Serna) is a lawyer and Diego's number one fan; she also likes to kill men with a hairpin at the point of orgasm. The pair are destined to meet.

A collection of four of Pedro Almodóvar's films from the 1980's and 1990's.

Matador (1986). Bullfighting with a difference, in which we see pious behaviour and murder. Extras: Trailer. With an introduction by José Arroyo.

The Law Of Desire (1987). Frustrated relationships, from a film maker (Pablo Quintero) and his lovers. With an introduction by José Arroyo.

Kika (1993). Outrageous costumes and behavior, a dizzy make-up artist , an escaped prisoner, murder ... Extras: Cast and Crew interviews; Pedro Almodóvar interview; Trailer; Introducing the characters; The Music. With an introduction by José Arroyo.

The Flower Of My Secret (1995). A story of self criticism and love. Extras: Cast and Crew interviews; Pedro Almodóvar interview; Trailer. With an introduction by José Arroyo.

This is a great collection if you are a fan of Pedro Almodóvar. Four different films but all with great direction and story from Almodóvar and great acting from the likes of Euserbio Poncela, Antonio Banderas, Carmen Maura, Veronica Forque, Peter Coyote, Victoria Abril, Rossy de Palma, Marisa Paredes and Chus Lampreave amongst others.

Subtitles in English are included but are not optional.

Even at twice the price this collection is worth having if you are a fan of Almodovar. The twisted dark comedy cant fail to suprise and uplift you. his female characters as ever dominate but its good to see how Antonia Banderas started out in Spanish film.

The Spanish film-maker Pedro Almodóvar has been at the forefront of world cinema since the mid 1980s. To date he has 19 feature films to his name and since 1987’s The Law of Desire he has been a permanent fixture on the international film festival circuit. Strangely for a top European director he has never won at Cannes, but he did receive academy awards for All About My Mother (1999) and Talk to Her (2002). In my view his films are as great as everyone says they are and we are lucky to have them all on DVD in convenient, low priced and extremely well produced box sets coming from Optimum World and Pathé. Volumes 1 & 2 of Optimum’s collection are both mandatory purchases and include all the films from Pepi, Luci, Bom (1980) through to The Flower of My Secret (1995) except for Labyrinth of Passion (1982), High Heels (1991) and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990). All the films (except What Have I Done to Deserve This? [1984]) come with very interesting introductions by José Arroyo and on the Kika (1993) and The Flower of My Secret discs there are interviews with the cast including Almodóvar. For the later films I chose Pathé’s box including All About My Mother, Talk to Her, Bad Education (2004) and Volver (2006), but for completeness you might want to get Pathé’s 7 DVD ‘The Ultimate Collection’ which includes these four together with Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, Broken Embraces (2009) and The Skin I Live In (2011). You will notice that Live Flesh (1997) and High Heels (1991) are both missing from these box sets. There is a fifth 5 DVD Pathé set which includes All About My Mother, Talk to Her, Bad Education, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! and Live Flesh. Buy this though and you will miss out on Volver, a film many acclaim as the director’s best.Read more ›

My son asked me to buy him some Almodovar films for his A' Level Spanish course, so I bought him this box set and Volume 1 as well. He has enjoyed watching the films. So have I.

Some of his more obscure, less commercial films that are great to watch. A must for all Almodovar fans. I prefer this to vol 1.

The films made by this director are very interesting, if somewhat strange at times I like Penelope Crux very much
