Product Description

Amanda Somerville is an American singer-songwriter and vocal coach best known for her collaborations with various European metal bands (Avantasia, Epica, Kamelot, After Forever). Since 1999 she has resided and worked mainly in Germany and the Netherlands. With a vocal range from tenor to soprano and stylistically diverse, Amanda s solo career has thus far been primarily comprised of soft and elegant pop/rock with some hard rock, folk and soul music influences.TRILLIUM is something new, exciting and very diverse for Amanda, who describes it more like an expedition with my musical family to explore and celebrate the metamorphosis I've gone through as an artist over the past several years. Quite simply, it's my new baby . The TRILLIUM name came about since it symbolizes a trinity because things are always showing up in 3s in my environment and there are a number of triads occurring in this project, as well tells Amanda. The name of the album, "Alloy," is symbolic and metaphorical. An alloy is a substance composed of two or more metals, or of a metal or metals combined with a non-metal, intimately mixed. It also means standard; quality; fineness and is an admixture, as of good with evil. I'm a Pisces, so I'm all about duality and combining known elements - sometimes opposing each other - to create something different. Though I've been working myself further and further into the metal scene, I still always feel the need to add an extra element to make it shine, bling, stand out .Musically, TRILLIUM is a hybrid of rock and metal: it's riffy, has a heavy hand instrumentally and is quite different from anything Amanda has ever worked on so far. The creative team on the album includes the acclaimed Sascha Paeth & Miro (KAMELOT, AVANTASIA, EPICA, AFTER FOREVER, ANGRA etc.) on production, songwriting and performances with the participation of Sander Gommans (ex After Forever) and also features Jorn Lande on a very special duet with Amanda.Amanda's sound is eclectic yet particular, sweet yet raw and commercial yet conventionally-challenged. Singer-songwriter metal with bling. Think Annie Lennox, Doro, Rob Zombie and Sade thrown into a blender and whipped into a frothy concoction. I would near certainly never have bought this, had I not caught Trillium live in support of Delain on their UK this year. Until then I had only connected Amanda Somerville with After Forever & Epica, neither of which I could ever really get into at all.So I quite expected to also be underwhelmed by this band too, and was quite unprepared for the impact of her powerful stage presence and vocals ,delivering a short ,heavy set with a much simpler ,unpretentious "direct" feel, with neither any symphonics nor any "filler" thrash drumming.
.
All that feel fully carries through into this album, one of those you really need to FULLY listen to ,more so than most, and preferably on decent kit (much as I also found say the later Stream of Passion albums).Otherwise ,it might well all sound rather unoriginal and vaguely like a number of other "MFV" bands out there. Amanda writes and sings strong songs "from life" and as the album's title itself hints, you can't neatly " tag" them as power, goth or any other one Metal "sub genre".

So, very glad I bought this ,and will catch hopefully up with her other "After After Forever" work before too long(and catch live again , if and when Trillium "Headline" in UK!).

To see and hear more, you can track down a near whole live gig's worth of clips from March 11 including some "Alloy "numbers. The full album list is:

Machine Gun/Coward/Purge/Utter Descension /Bow To The Ego/Mistaken/Scream It/Justifiable Casualty/Path Of Least Resistance/Into The Dissonance/Slow It Down/Love Is An Illusion

After a lifetime of loving progressive rock, blues, heavy rock in all its genres with favourite bands being Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Thunder, Journey, Whitesnake, Deep Purple and all obvious related projects I have dipped my toe into the european waters of these female fronted metal bands (and I do love a female front!).
Listening to Nightwish, After Forever, Evanescence, Lacuna Coil and Epica I have not been overly moved. Within Temptation have an occasional good melody but too many of their songs are a bit samey in terms of chord progression and structure. Delain have really raised the bar with their last 2 albums but in Amanda Somerville and her band Trillian my ears hear something very special. Her voice can be as poignant in singing a ballad as Beverley Craven but she can also rock out with enough power to match the mighty Jorn Lande in "Scream it". Alloy is a stunning collection of songs that match a great dynamic range both within songs and across the album, always melodic and intelligent lyrically, the arrangements are interesting to listen to. The musicians are excellent with honours to the guitar solos which are tight, technical tour de forces of carefully composed melodic elaborations enhancing the song musically (reminding me of Schenker and Blackmore at times!).
Highly recommended!

Saw Trillium supporting Magnum at O2 Academy Newcastle last night (22 Nov 2012). They were brilliant. If you like Evanescence, Nightwish, Within Temptation or Delain you will love Trillium. This album rocks from start to finish and Amanda's voice matches her truly outstanding beauty.

Saw Trillium in support of Delain recently and was very impressed with the whole set, one of the rare times when the support act are 'rather good'. Having never heard anything by Trillium before, took a leap of faith and bought album, have not been disappointed, vocals are overpowered in places but this, in no way, detracts from an excellent album. Will keep tabs on Trillium as it could be a promising future. Anyone unsure, give them a go, you will not be disappointed!

This is a truly amazing album. I've always been amazed at Amanda Somerville's vocals, but I had no idea she is such a great songwriter as well. This album showcases her talents brilliantly, from her powerful vocals, to her sublime lyrics and music. There are no weak songs here at all. I cannot recommend this album highly enough. An absolute must have! I can't stop listening to it.
