This is an excellent series and I wish they had done more. The storyline shows some up of the less savoury aspects of the church and does so with humour and sensitivity, if also with a touch of melodrama. The Tonks (especially Mrs) were perfect villains, and Layla was loathsome. Jake was a delightfully disruptive influence, and Esther's growth through the episodes was just right. This was the first show I'd seen with Sarah Lancashire, and I was an immediate fan. And it was so nice to see a character with a difference treated in such a positive light. I loved the music and the arrangements, especially for Esther's choir, were brilliant.

I think this series would have benefited from another couple of episodes so that more time could have been spent on character development - especially of Layla, who was something of a one-dimensional villain. We never really got to know how she turned the way she did.

I wasn't totally convinced by some of the casting. Not that the acting wasn't good, but I thought Georgia looked much more like she could have been Layla's daughter than she did either Esther or Michael's, and I found that distracting, especially when there was no likeness at all between Layla and Jake (which also meant that I felt a bit cheated when the truth of their relationship was revealed). The other thing I found annoying was the unnecessary amount of swearing throughout, from virtually all the characters. Given that the show is about a church choir, this felt as though it was pandering to the masses rather than a realistic portrayal of the people involved. One or even two people being free with their language would have been realistic, but everyone?

This series is definitely a keeper, to be watched again and again.

Wonderful series, that I loved when it was on television and I really enjoyed watching again. I'll certainly do so a few more times! Good storyline, poignant and thoughtful with characters that you take to straight away & others that make you want to scream with vexation. It's basically the story of two choirs, one that thinks it has all the best voices and is determined to win competitions and the other made up of all the small things - the people that make up for not being perhaps the best singers in the world but just enjoy a good sing-song. The main plot however is about a husband, musical director of the first choir, who leaves his wife for a younger woman, manipulative and thoughtless of the feelings of others, while his long-suffering wife sets out to try to carry on with her life, starting up a new choir by taking all the so-called misfits not wanted by her husband and his mistress. Well worth buying.

Having paid an extortionate price for this dvd second hand, based on the reviews alone, it was with some trepidation that I sat down to watch it. However, I was completely blown away by the quality of the whole series. An uplifting musical drama, a tale of love and betrayal, the writing, direction and acting are all superb. Added to all this is the music and quality of the singing. I realise that many of our actors went to stage school where they were trained in the performing arts but I was surprised and delighted to hear how well some of our more well known actors can sing. Sarah Alexander's soprano was so beautiful I watched closely to see whether or not she was miming. Sarah Lancashire's lovely voice too was a total surprise (I wished there was more of it) as was Richard Fleeshman's who played autistic Kyle so convincingly and brilliantly. The only actor who seemed miscast to me was son "Fred" who wasn't meant to be likeable but he just didn't fit as Esther's son. However, the casting overall was brilliant. Once I started watching I couldn't stop. I was fortunate enough to be able to watch the whole series from beginning to end in one sitting (341 minutes). I bought this dvd with the intention of selling it on but I think this is one gem I want to keep and watch again.

After watching Marleys Ghosts with Sarah Alexander, I remembered watching All the small things on TV about 7 years ago. Found the DVD on Amazon, so ordered it. It arrived very promptly and in perfect condition. I would definitely recommend this film series, I am in a choir and can relate to the story line. It has humour, tragedy and lovely music, so glad I bought this.

I bought this after reading the glowing reviews and, whilst I wasn't totally bored with it, neither did it leap out at me as being anything particularly special. After the first episode, I put it away for ages and struggled to summon up the will to carry on with it, eventually doing so later with lukewarm enthusiasm.

To be truthful, I found Esther's portrayal of how she coped with being thrown over for a younger woman less than realistic. Her "nicey-nicey" approach and her refusal to see her husband as having been in the wrong in any way was really quite nauseating. It simply isn't realistic that she wouldn't have got upset and ranted and raved even a LITTLE bit. I mean, come on! But no, she became even nicer (if that's possible)and even more accommodating.

Other issues with realism cropped up too. For example, did any of these people actually work? Did they have NO other life except for the choir? No one was portrayed as ever having any sort of paid job; all were able to turn up to the church at all hours. Even the new curate managed to get through the whole thing without actually once doing any sort of church duties. And what of Layla's background? There was never a suitable explanation given as to where she got her money or what REALLY happened (from her point of view)to make her and her brother fall out so spectacularly.

So, yeah. It was OK. But nowhere near as good as it could have been.
