Product description

Product Description

Ryley Walker is a 24 year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Chicago. His debut album, All Kinds Of You, will be released worldwide via Tompkins Square on April 15th, 2014. Having kicked around Chicago's experimental free/noise music scene for several years, Ryley recently turned to a folk-rock sound inspired by some of his heroes, among them Tim Hardin, Tim Buckley, and Bert Jansch. The result is a poised and accomplished debut album, recorded in Chicago by Cooper Crain (guitarist/keyboardist in Cave). The West Wind, Ryley's debut 3 song 12" EP released in November, features "The West Wind" from the forthcoming album, and two B sides : "A Home For Me" and "Sweet Little Betsy" (w/Daniel Bachman). The piece received praise from UNCUT, NPR, BBC, Rolling Stone and many other outlets. Appearing at SXSW Thurs. March 13th, Stephen F's, Intercontinental, 10 pm. Show picked by NPR as one of their 'Austin 100'. Touring the US with Wrekmeister Harmonies and Cloud Nothings. Also touring Europe extensively in 2014. Lunar Festival, Roskilde and more. "With the charming swagger of jazz-folk troubadour Tim Buckley and the resonant, full picking style of Bert Jansch, 'The West Wind' comes from Walker's first widely available release, a three-song 12". With acoustic guitar in hand and a voice like browned butter, Walker swings and sways in a lush string-and piano arrangement right out of Buckley's 'Starsailor'; it slowly picks up to a swirling gallop without bucking the rhythm." - NPR Music

Stunning album. More of a guitar fest than the second album and less vocal acrobatics, but excellent none the less.

Oh this is splendid stuff! Ryley Walker is a 24 year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Chicago. His debut album "All Kinds of You" is out now on the Tompkins Square label. While he may hail from the Mid West his musical centre of gravity could more accurately be located at The Trades Club in Hebden Bridge. Walker wears his influences on his sleeve and they are largely British in origin. In this album echoes of John Renbourn, Davy Graham and the master Bert Jansch are scattered over the grooves (so of course is the American style of John Fahey). In the vocal stakes it is variants of the two "Tim's" namely Hardin and Buckley that abound.

The album starts with the passion of "West Wind" all swirling riffs executed with gusto, and then quietens for the lovely "Blessing" a song about the pain of loss with vibes of Jansch's music infusing its spiritual direction. The mood lightens considerably on "Twin Oaks Part I" where Walker shows his tremendous guitar picking skills and then moves into one of the album standouts. "Great River Road" is a travelling song, a tale of a journey around the mid West following the Mississippi through Wisconsin and Minnesota. Like his great contemporary Sam Amidon this album sees Walker takes old templates and revitalise them, with these songs setting out his refreshing personal vision. Mention in dispatches should also go to the epic baroque folk of "Clear the Sky", the weaving deep blues of "Fonda" with its exquisite guitar and piano lines, and finally the instrumental joy de vivre of the concluding track "Tanglewood Spaces" drawing the curtain down to a fitting closing.

At such a young age Walker is a musician to watch. His vocal style is not quite entirely his own as yet, but that will come. His guitar playing alternatively is masterly and on the evidence of "All Kinds of You" who knows what great heights he will scale.

What a fine young musician! Since the demise of Tim Buckley, John Martyn, Bert Jansch, Pentangle - I have been waiting (a long time, now) for something new like this. Ryley Walker blends the best of these older artists - with an exciting new result. You have to be in awe of the musicianship and singing prowess.
