Billy Joe (B.J.) Thomas is probably regarded as a bit of a one-hit-wonder in the U.K. these days, although even his one hit was more successfully covered by Sacha Distel here! Although B.J. is not known as a songwriter he did know a few and recorded the original versions of a number of their songs that later became more famous by other artists.

The twenty four tracks featured on this CD cover B.J's career up to the mid seventies and offer the best one-CD overview of his most well known period. Released by BMG Australia over ten years ago it contains the tracks that were most successful in that country.

The newer CD from the U.K's Ace label has better sound quality for the tracks it duplicates but covers a more selective period of B.J's career. If the tracks you are interested in are on the Ace release then that is the disc to buy, however, if you want a broader view - and can find this Australian disc at a good price - it will offer a better career retrospective.

A good and generous choice of material with one star deducted as the audio is not up to todays standards - tracks featured as follows:

1. Billy and Sue
2. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
3. Mama
4. Bring Back the Time
5. Tomorrow Never Comes
6. I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)
7. The Eyes of a New York Woman
8. Hooked on a Feeling
9. It's Only Love
10. Pass the Apple Eve
11. Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head
12. Everybody's out of Town
13. I Just Can't Help Believing
14. Most of All
15. No Love at All
16. Mighty Clouds of Joy
17. Long Ago Tomorrow
18. Rock and Roll Lullaby
19. That's What Friends Are For
20. (Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song
21. Help Me Make It (To My Rocking Chair)
22. Don't Worry Baby
23. Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Love
24. Two Car Garage

Despite having several huge hits in his native America (including 2 number one's) B J Thomas is hardly known in the U.K. He struggled to reach number 38 in March 1970 with the original recording of Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head, losing out to the much more inferior Sacha Distel version. Since then not as much as a dent in the charts in this country. However in the US the hits keep coming. I was amazed at how good this chap really is. Hooked On A Feeling and (Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song are stand out tracks. This guy could really sing and he had some great material. I Just Can't Help Believing is another classic song which fans of the early 70s will recognise. This is a very enjoyable set. I recommend it.

HASH(0xa09edf84) out of 5 stars Look no further.....this is definitely the one you want 3 Sept. 2003

Spanning a period of more than 20 years and containing hits from 4 different labels, this Australian import is clearly the finest B.J. Thomas collection ever assembled. The first cut is the 1966 classic "Billy and Sue" which was released on Nashville's Hickory label. What follows are 18 cuts containing just about every one of B.J.'s hits on the Scepter label. Everyone is familiar with his biggest hits "Hooked on A Feeling" and of course his signature song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head", but frankly I am partial to some of his lesser known hits including "The Eyes of A New York Woman", "Mighty Clouds of Joy" and "Mama". But whatever your preference you will surely find them all here. Also included are a couple of his hits for MCA including "Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" as well as well as hit remake of the Beach Boys classic "Don't Worry Baby".

The final two cuts are from his days at Columbia. At this point in the mid-eighties, his records were only being played on country and adult contemporary stations. In my opinion, "Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Love?" is one of his best discs ever. So spend an extra few bucks and pick up "B.J. Thomas: All the Hits/The Ultimate Collection". This is one of the best values you'll ever find.

HASH(0xa1455b28) out of 5 stars This IS the Ultimate!!! 9 May 2001
By Alan Russo - Published on Amazon.com

At last a collection that REALLY lives up to it's title! This collection includes all of BJ's big and most popular hits. It is arrainged in cronological order and covers his 1960's, 70's and 80's hits! The quality of the CD is also noteworthy. Sometimes with collections that cover such a wide range of years, usually lack a consistancy and fullness to each song. This one doesn't! It is great! You feel like they were all recorded today, but they are all original recordings! Enjoy!

HASH(0xa14684a4) out of 5 stars ALL the Best from BJ! 12 Jun. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

If you've wanted all of BJs hits on one CD, then this CD is for you! Chronicles his career from "Billy and Sue", to his last big hit,"What Ever Happened to Old-Fashioned Love?". All excellent recordings from original master tapes on BMG. It is only a shame that most of the best compliations by the great american pop/rock artists are only available on import CDs due to the greed factor by domestic labels for distribution in the US. In any event, this CD is worth the wait! You will want to keep this one in your permanent collection. This is a definate 5 star CD!

This is the most comprehensive collection of BJ Thomas hits out there, and sounds great too. If you like BJ Thomas, this is definitely the "Greatest Hits" CD to get.

HASH(0xa101bcd8) out of 5 stars Very Disappointing Quality 12 Sept. 2009
By Carol M. Bouchard - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
All of the hits are included, but the quality leaves a great deal to be desired. A better sound quality is expected in this day and age of technology. It is definitely overpriced for what you get and a terrible disappointment. Consider other options to obtaining the same songs.
