Priya Sharma is a doctor from the UK who also writes short fiction. Her work has appeared in Interzone, Black Static, Albedo one and Tor.com, among others. She’s been anthologised in various annual Best of anthologies by editors like Ellen Datlow, Paula Guran, Jonathan Strahan and Johnny Mains. Her story “Fabulous Beasts” was on the Shirley Jackson Award shortlist and won a British Fantasy Award.

Absolutely stunning collection of dark short stories. Priya Sharma is one to watch out for, and I cannot wait to see if she is releasing a full length novel. I loved everything about this book; the dark themes, the imagery, the twists in the end that you don't see coming. This is the kind of book that simultaneously makes me want to give up writing forever, as I could never write anything so good, and pushes me on to write better.

rapturous symphony of darkly inspiring stories

I see that as a workmanlike bonus work. A coda to this otherwise rapturous symphony of darkly inspiring stories with tidal flensing of emotions. Taken as a whole, an unforgettable experience from an author with half-hidden instruments of spiritual dissection emerging from between the hawling-lines of her words. Tilting at myths and legends that help float the buoys of real life.

Priya Sharma's debut collection All the Fabulous Beasts is an exquisite collection of dark fantasy and horror stories (from the always fantastic Undertow Publications). These are emotionally charged, beguiling tales and Priya Sharma's writing is precise and luxurious. Themes of transformation, belonging, love and loss thread through the collection, which revels in the marvellous and monstrous creations brought into the light for our reading pleasure. Five Fabulous Stars!

A book of uncommonly good stories

I’ve been a fan of Priya Sharma’s work since I first read her story “The Sunflower Seed Man”, so when her debut collection was announced by Michael Kelly at Undertow it instantly rocketed to the top of my ‘must read’ list. Undertow Publications have become somewhat notorious for producing beautiful books, and “All the Fabulous Beasts” is no exception – the accompanying artwork is the perfect complement to Sharma’s darkly beautiful prose, and great attention to detail has clearly been paid to the placement of each story, both in terms of typesetting and chronology.

“The Absent Shade” is perhaps my favourite story in the book. An almost Shakespearean tragedy, “The Absent Shade” follows Thomas, the neglected son of wealthy Hong Kong Chinese parents, and a woman named Umbra, the family’s Filipina domestic servant. The narrative leaps masterfully back and forth in time, charting Thomas’s lonely, empty future and the terrible decision that led him there. “The Absent Shade” paints a world cast in perpetual shadow, in which the wealthy abuse their privilege, and the abandoned cling to scraps of warmth, and retribution, even at its most righteous, feels very much like damnation. A masterpiece of storytelling.

Closing tale, the titular “Fabulous Beasts”, is perhaps the best known of Sharma’s stories, and for good reason; it’s a visceral gutpunch which charts the messy dissolution of a family, and a young girl’s escape from an abusive patriarch. To say more would spoil what makes this story so special, so I will simply say that this is the perfect way to close a book of uncommonly good stories; Sharma paints pictures with prose, and every story has multiple layers which leave food for thought long after you’ve finished reading.

This is a strange, luscious and marvellous collection. Priya Sharma's has a voice unlike any other; she speaks fluently of folklore, birds, bees, beasts, liminality, identity and family. Her stories are alive with a weird magic that leads us in and loses us in a maze of sensuous prose. This collection demonstrates a powerful range; the stories are set in various locations and time periods and the characters speak with many voices. Sharma's worlds flit from the magical to the real, but are always recognisable. From the fairytale beauty and pain of 'The Crow Palace' to the terrifying power of "Fabulous Beasts" she spins narratives that fascinate and disturb in equal measure. Each tale is different, but all are infused with a passion, a siren call, a beating of mighty wings.

These stories are jewels; things of beauty to be read slowly, savoured, lingered over. Read them.

Award winning author, Priya Sharma, brings together a collection of some of the most amazing short stories I have ever read. Each one is a perfect vignette – conjuring up such vivid imagery I am amazed filmmakers aren’t beating her door down to sign her up. She successfully combines the fantastic and mythological with fairytale, legend and folklore. Humans, birds and animals transform into more than they were at first. Even the most challenged of the ‘fabulous beasts’ she creates have the ability to metamorphose into creatures of wonder and beauty.
