Review

'Delightful... it has the virtues of brevity, eclecticism and learning worn lightly... if they'd had Mary Beard on their side back then, the Romans would still have their empire' -- Daily Mail --Daily Mail

'A winning blend of seriousness and chattiness...This book is a lovely thing to dip into' Observer --Observer

'Beard manages to be controversial without the grandstanding ... A real treat' Independent on Sunday

'Beard is far too entertaining to be kept just for educationalists' The Lady --The Lady

Book Description

Mary Beard's famous blog 'A Don's Life' has been running on the TLS website for nearly five years. Through it she made her name as a wickedly subversive commentator on the world in which we live.

This is hardly a deeply intellectual read, but a further selection of topics from her blog plus comments from others. But it's a great book to read in short snatches, and as ever thought-provoking. She effortlessly combines academic rigor with a down to earth, practical approach to life, and a sense of humour (she always seems to have a risque, if not grubby, Roman joke suitable to the occasion) which makes her writing race along. Good fun!!

I bought this to take on the 'plane with me and it fulfilled its purpose admirably. Quite a lot of erudition slipped into the accounts of the daily routine and quite honest and lacking in pomposity about her job. I enjoyed it, though I wonder how long I will remember the detail.

Mary gives a good cross section of Topics in this book version of weblogs.

She discusses all kinds of topics and even prints the intelligent comments posted by others. That is to emphasise the intelligent ones - not the vitriolic abuse on many web sites. She also discusses this.

A good read from a good writer and intellectual.
