`All the Boys Love Mandy Lane' is a teen slasher film in the style of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and Scream and is about a girl named Mandy Lane (Amber Heard) who becomes something of a hottie over the summer break. All the guys want to be with her and all the girls want to be her. Then one weekend a group of horny teens head to one of their parents' ranch and are then picked off one by one by someone in the darkness.

I watched this film with low expectations as a majority of these types of films tend to be rubbish, but I was pleasantly surprised that this was actually quite different. The basic formula is the same as other slashers where scantily clad teens run about and getting killed off in various brutal ways by an unknown killer, but the thing that stood out in this movie was the ending which really was an excellent twist and quite a shock. The killings aren't all that original and there aren't that many of them either. In fact, the first person doesn't actually get killed until over 30 minutes into the film, which I felt built up the tension and the story a lot rather than just jumping straight into the murders. The killer is really obvious and if you don't get it within the first few scenes, you must really not be paying attention. It's not that important though as the suspense and surprises more than make up for that.

One thing I strongly advise though is NOT to buy this on Blu Ray as the picture quality is absolutely terrible - at times even worse than some bad quality standard DVDs.

This 2006 [released 2008 in the UK] American slasher film stars Amber Heard as Mandy Lane, who developed into a "hot chick" over the summer and suddenly got very popular with the boys who all want to "get with her" and all the girls want to be her. Mandy seems unsettled by all the attention and when the ‘popular’ crowd invite her to a pool party, she insists that geeky friend Emmet comes along. However, a prank goes tragically wrong and Emmet is blamed. Nine months later and the two have drifted apart as Mandy has joined the ‘popular’ kids, and she accepts an invitation to her friend Red's frat party, taking place at his fathers deserted ranch. As Mandy and her group of five friends settle down to a weekend of drunken debauchery fuelled by cocaine, pot, and booze, Mandy isn’t impressed by it all and remains somewhat aloof, preferring ranch hand Garth who is looking after the ranch.
This is a very competent, stylish slasher in the style of ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘Scream’. It's an enjoyable watch and is very much a throwback to the 80's slasher films, with the usual line up of promiscuous teens in peril getting killed off in various brutal ways by an unknown killer. However a few things distinguish this from others of its type, the first being that the first murder doesn't actually happen until over 30 minutes into the film, which helped set the scene, bumping up the tension and the story once things did start to kick in. The other is the ingenious twist at the end which also raises questions as to the motivations of the main protagonists, which are easy to figure, but not adequately explained [lose a *].
Compared to most films of the genre the killings tend to be standard fare and not over the top long drawn out gore fests, and many may not like the ‘slow’ start, so hard-core slasher fans may be disappointed. However, I still feel this is worth a solid **** rating just barely missing the top marks.

Slasher films – the lynchpin of the horror genre... a handful of good-looking, interchangeable teenagers go, er, somewhere desolate where mobile phones obvious don’t work then get picked off by locals/werewolves/monsters – take your pick.

Here, in ‘All the Boys Love Mandy Lane’ the affore-mentioned interchangeable teens go to a country farmhouse in order to – well – get with (for use of a better term) the much-adored Mandy Lane (played by Amber Heard, before her romance with Mr Depp). Unfortunately, before any of them even make it near first base with Ms Lane, a nutter starts slicing and dicing them.

Now, normally, there’s an element of mystery surrounding who the masked killer is. Here, there isn’t – here you basically know who the killer is straight away (and he doesn’t ever wear a mask for very long). So don’t expect to be guessing who-dunn-it with this one. One guy obviously loves the future Mrs Depp a little too much and has a novel way of dealing with rival suitors.

So, there you have it – kids getting stalked and slashed – nothing new. And that’s about it. Basically, you’ve seen it all before and there’s nothing that will particularly amaze you (although I did quite l like the ending and thought it was a little different). However, if you generally like your slasher films then this one should entertain.

Nothing special, but if you’re a fan of the genre then it should fill an hour and a half of your time (although, personally, I thought Mandy Lane’s mate was prettier than the – much sort-after – lead!).
