If you are already a committed Alkanian, this disc is self recommending.

Superbly performed and recorded, this disc contains a couple of first recordings and demonstrates wonderfully what admirers of the composers find so appealing about his oeuvre - that amazing inventiveness and quirkiness of character is evident in abundance here.

Often, recordings of two pianos are distinctly substandard but there are no reservations whatsoever here. The recording is clear, sonorous and wonderfully detailed.

A must-buy for all Alkan enthusiasts.

A superbly realised version. Alkan was a consummate pianist who is said to jhave made even Liszt uncomfortable by his presence. One of his favourite instruments was the pedalboard piano, which hardly exists today,so these works are almost totally neglected: if they are played at all it is usually on the organ, for which they are plainly unsuited. These arrangements for piano duo (or duet) are not a compromise but a brilliant solution to the problem of performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Alkan lover is a bit disappointed, but just a bit. 30 Mar. 2011

I like Alkan's popular compositions, but had never heard the material on this disc. I listened to it out of curiosity. The performance was good enough, very good, in fact, but the pieces themselves were, I though, unworthy of Alkan. Still, all in all, I'm glad I was exposed to them.
5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the "Impromptu" 9 Mar. 2014
By CCP - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I've collected Alkan's music for 20 years and one thing I've always imagined and wanted to hear was a two-piano of the "Impromptu sur le Choral de Luther: Un fort rempart est notre Dieu". I had only previously heard the organ version. I could tell it was one of Alkan's best pieces, but on the organ, in the one recording of it that I know of, the details tend to get a bit diffuse / mushy. Not here! You hear everything, including some pretty far-out harmonies for the time (next someone needs to arrange this for large orchestra with lots of percussion and organ...). The pianists play it to the hilt. Not every piece here is on that level of quality but all are a romp.
4.0 out of 5 stars Alkan - Complete Piano Duos and Duets 21 Jan. 2013

I initially chose to purchase the cd because I did not have any of the pieces on the disc in my growing collection of Alkan's music. I purchased it with no expectations of how much I was going to enjoy it. As it turns out I am very pleased with the recordings, I think the music was beautifully played and interpreted. I am grateful that Gladstone and Clemmow chose to record these gems and grateful to the production team that helped create such a clear sound.
5.0 out of 5 stars Alkan Piano Duos & Duets 22 Oct. 2011

A must have for Alkan fans...the artists play with dynamism and in concert...grand arrangements for two pianos of some works...and world premiere recordings of selected works...a must have as the recorded Alkan library is so sparse...
