The graphics are terrific! Sure, there are a few games better, but these graphics are awesome! Such detail in the surroundings like the computers, and the monsters, very good.
I played all three campaigns over several days, and will outline them in the order I played them in.
Colonial Marine Campaign
You get to shoot but melee is weak. Runs about 5 hours. Lots of action and guns. The Smartgun is now my favorite FPS gun of all time. Shoot crazy with that thing! The Scoped Rifle is very nice, the Shotgun is powerful and the Assault Rifle fires grenades! The Aliens look terrific. They move really fast, but you can take them out well enough! I did not play my first playthrough on Hard or Nightmare, so this game was tons of fun! You get health packs, and another soldier talks to you frequently, so it does not feel like the other two campaigns where you are alone. Watch out for the Facehuggers, they are nasty. Overall, the Marine campaign was great!
You get to melee but not shoot. Runs about 2 hours. Since all you can do is run and melee something, and then run away, this campaign can feel a little boring at times. I mean, the melee and run away tactics are the same throughout, so how long does this campaign really need to be? I found it just right. Oh, and scurrying along the walls is great fun! Just remember, the camera is set for ground level, so while you are upside down everything is reversed - easy to master, except seeing things upside down is weird! This was a good campaign, I loved it!
You get to shoot and melee! Runs about 4 hours. In this campaign you play the predator, and can melee as well as shoot. You also get cool weaponry, like the disk and stick to throw, also mines. The coolest things about this campaign are the invisibility cloak for stealth attacks and using the visor. One visor setting is normal, another is infrared (useful to me, I liked that mode!), and the third setting is ultraviolet which detects aliens (serpents) with ease. Jumping is easy and great. The Predator is very powerful, and tons of fun to play!
Overall, this is not a bad game at all. The controls work well, shooting is a breeze, and taking out hordes of serpents is just totally awesome fun!
Anyway, I hope this review helps. AvP may not be a 10 out of 10, but it sure is better than most reviewers say it is!
Definitely worth a play just for the singleplayer portions, especially if you're trying to wash the stain of Colonial Marines from your mouth.
There's one mode called Infestation where all players start out as Marines, and as the game starts one is automatically selected to be an Alien.
It's up to the marines to band together to fight off the "infestation" as every time the Alien player kills one of the marines, they also become an alien, until all the marines are killed off.
The typical team deathmatch has all 3 races, Alien, Predator, and Marine, all with their own strengths and weaknesses.
So many games today only have your basic deathmatch and team deathmatch it's nice to see some variations on the game modes especially with Infestation.
