Manufacturer's Description
Alice: Madness Returns delves deep into the dark and violent side of the imagination, creating a nightmarish Wonderland where Alice must face the demons that haunt her visions. Visit the grim reality of Victorian London and then travel to the beautiful yet ghastly Wonderland to uncover the root of Alice’s madness and discover the truth behind a deadly secret, kept hidden for years.
Eleven years ago a horrific fire took Alice’s family from her and left her mind horrifically scarred. Afterwards she was confined to Rutledge Asylum, where she struggled to confront her demons by slipping further into her fantasy world of Wonderland. Now, after ten years, she has finally secured her release—yet she still bears the heavy psychological burden of that tragic event.
With her mind in tatters, she is unable to resolve the fear prompted by her strange memories, dreams, and visions. Perhaps she’ll do better in Wonderland. She always has. She travels there, seeking what the “real” world can’t provide: security, knowledge, and the truth about the past. But in her absence, Wonderland too has suffered. Something has gone horribly wrong, and now a great evil is descending upon what once was her beautiful refuge. Can Alice save Wonderland—and herself—from the madness that consumes them both?

As you`d expect, the graphics are so much more fluid and, after levelling them up, the weaponary is a lot stronger although the controls are a little different so you`ll have to get used to them but once mastered, you`ll really enjoy it.
In the normal gameplay, Alice gets a new dress after each level completed which gives you the option of swapping around but (unless you fiddle with the .inf files) you won`t get the total of six until you`ve finished the game at which point, you can re-play it with a full wardrobe and in case anyone`s wondering, stripey tights are the order of the day except for the water dress which sees her barefoot.
There is a downside to this version though and that is the bugs. No, not the caterpillar or even the flying beetles that drop something suspiciously explosive on her head but the game bugs and if you find something not working as it should do and then `Google` it, you`ll find that a lot of people in a lot of forums have the same gripe but if you`re confident enough to mess about with the .inf files, there are plenty of guys out there with solutions to whatever difficulty you come across ... It`s just a shame that EA and Spicy Horse haven`t cottoned on to it and patched the game accordingly.
The concept of the game is brilliant and for the money it`s worth giving it a go even if you hadn`t been captivated by the original version as long as you`re aware that it`s sometimes a bit buggy although most problems can be solved with some in-depth researching. For the male population out there the answer is yes, you can get quite a few other dresses for Alice but you`ll have to work out how for yourselves ;-)
When it comes to this original story... I was into it totally. The psychiatric scenes and the "real-life" line were fulfilling and managed to keep me interested, even though there are not much action to be done in there. Well, the plot twist was obvious for me from the very start, but it's not a whodunnit title anyway.
The gameplay is really enjoyable. It has all a fan of non-shooting actions would like - many keys to use, full control over Alice's actions and several twists such as her becoming a giant where movements are in fact influenced by her big body.
For all who are wondering about purchasing this game: If you enjoy the genre, buy it.
If you can find the will to overcome the first few levels and bugs and play on, you will find a deep and rich story filled with rounded characters that expand with every memory collected.
But it would seem that the Mad Hatter got his hands on the voicing script somewhere between the last edit and production.
The puzzles are kept simple and never over used in a level, this helps to keep the level builds interesting but invisible, moving platforms can bring an element of frustration. I get the feeling that this is not a story to be rushed, but savoured... like a nice cup of tea.
If you miss the first Alice, this is a real treat and it's now at a good price.
