If it weren't for Alice Cooper's onstage antics, Kiss, Marilyn Manson and Glen Danzig might have evolved into summery pop artists suitable for family picnics. Yet as Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits record attests, the grandfather of shock rock brought much more to the rock arena than boa constrictors and simulated decapitations. In addition to classic hard rock anthems like "I'm Eighteen," "No More Mr. Nice Guy," and "School's Out," Cooper unleashed rollicking barroom rockers like "Under My Wheels" and tugged at the heartstrings with cuts like "Desperado" and "Hello Hooray." In retrospect, his songs have more in common with the Who and the Faces than with Black Sabbath or Judas Priest. But his songs were filled with soaring choruses and grandiose horn embellishes that proved he could be larger than life both on and off the stage. --Jon Wiederhorn

I absolutely adore this album. This seems to capture his best period perfectly - really strong songs and a more mellow, rock 'n' roll sound than his later stuff. Ultimately, I guess I just prefer the 'Alice Cooper Band', as captured here, to the later Alice Cooper solo artist stuff.

This album contains all Alice Cooper's big hits from the 1970s. If you were around then, they won't need any introduction to you, and if you liked them you will enjoy this collection.

My only grumble is that the sound quality is quite poor - very muffled in places. I have a vinyl version of this album (bought when it first came out) which I have recently transferred to a home-made CD. I wasn't happy with the sound quality and I thought it because it came from an old LP, So, I bought this CD, but the quality of this bought CD is not noticeably better.

If they had only left the world with "I'm Eighteen" they would still be remembered today. Rock's most subversive band at their commercially finest. Pure dynamite.

Not that bloody nostalgia again ,ok I own up I have been a fan since 1971 when I first heard Killer ,schools out with the fold up desk both spot on L.P.s you know that funny black plastic that can cost a fortune these days ,a mint copy of schools out with cover and with the paper panties that went around the record is worth a fair amount these days ,makes me wish I had treated mine a lot better

To be more accurate, the greatest hits of the original and greatest Alice Cooper band (albums from "Welcome to My Nightmare" on were solo albums cut with session musicians). It's easy to tell that these were real team efforts, the Alice Cooper band not just the singer, and as such are much better than his post-1975 output. All the classics-"I'm 18", "Schools' Out","Hello Horray","Muscle of Love"-are here and they're great
All of this stuff is available on albums from "Love It To death" to "Muscle of Love",so I'd buy the original material, available cheaply secondhand on Amazon. If you buy this, you'll end up buying them all anyway,so why wait?

This compilation of greatest hits which reaches up to Muscle of Love makes for a great album. Every track stands shoulder to shoulder with the others - nothing listed that seems weak or misplaced. Even if you have some of the albums already, this compilation sounds fresh and is very enjoyable to listen to - and also there is the wonderful cover artwork.
