The book describes how to approach pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood from the perspective of caring for your body and making best use of it in order to have as few problems as possible. It teaches you how to avoid back strain, relax and to be mentally present and active in your baby's birth instead of fighting against it or feeling defeated.
People new to Alexander technique will find that the book presumes no prior knowledge, though I would advise that a few lessons (group or individual) are probably necessary to really put it into practice. Conversely, for the reader who has already adopted the technique in their lifestyle the first few chapters might seem to be going over old ground.
There are plenty of ways it could be improved, not just by updating the look of the book but also making some reference to what obstacles or opportunities you are likely to face where modern hospitals and lifestyles are concerned. However, the sound physical principles behind it helped give me confidence in my body's own ability to give birth, and to do so calmly and in the way that I chose.
During actual delivery I softened my palate and kept the positions they recommended and it was so helpful - it allowed me to go right into the contractions without fighting them. I felt much more in control of the delivery and trusting of myself.
Can't recommend it highly enough.
