At first I found this edge-of-the-seat thriller a bit too violent, almost gratuitously so, but as I continued to read (it was impossible to put down) and the story gathered momentum, I was sure an explanation for such violence would soon unfold. It did, but not until the shocking and surprising ending, when, as the detective says, justice has been done. This is quite an unusual detective story and exceptionally well-written by a prize-winning French author who doesn't only write detective fiction.

By Sid Nuncius #1 HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on 7 Sept. 2014
Format: Mass Market Paperback
This turned out to be a very good thriller/crime novel. I had some reservations, particularly in the early part of the book, but in the end I found it enthralling, exciting and very well done.

The story begins with a brutal and very cruel kidnapping, but there are genuinely surprising, intriguing and just about plausible plot developments which take the book in unexpected directions. The narrative alternates between the activities of the criminal and those of the police which I found extremely effective, giving drive and mystery to the story. The characters of the small police team were very well drawn and I hope to meet them again in future books. The dénouement is excellent, avoiding the now tedious cliché of a Tense One-To-One Stand Off With A Cornered Killer, but with things emerging cleverly in police interviews which for me were some of the most gripping scenes in the book. Whether or not you accept the explanation for the killer's actions, it was depicted and drawn out with a great deal more ingenuity and subtlety than the sort of facile psychobabble which we quite often get in crime novels.

I had two reservations. One was a minor one about the translation which was a little clunky in places and often couldn't quite make up it's mind whether it was in UK or US English. The juxtaposition of distinctively UK usages with those unmistakeably from the US was a little disconcerting - especially at the start - but certainly not enough to spoil the book. My other problem is the level of cruelty and violence. There is a thin line between realistic depiction for the sake of the plot and gratuitous torture-porn. At times I thought this book strayed over the line, and despite finding the book as a whole very good this made me uneasy. Certainly you should be warned that this isn't for the faint of heart.

That said, I thought this a good, exciting and gripping book and can recommend it as a very involving read.

I bought this in French to keep my language up to speed and, from that point of view, it's been a good idea. I like this kind of literature anyway and have enjoyed reading it on that front, too. The story is a bit contrived insomuch as some elements go unexplained and a lot of the 'detecting' goes on behind the scenes - you don't really know how certain facts are uncovered. However, there are a number of clever twists and all is not as it seems at the outset ... a good read and I recommend it if you like a good murder mystery.

I found this book excellent from start to finish. The author writes really nice French, which is great to read in itself, but he has also executed a fascinating and surprising piece of story telling. So often, in any crime fiction, you get quite loose plotting, and/or lazy, cliched writing. This has none of those flaws. Great fun. Thoroughly recommended.

I gather that the English version of this book was released in the UK before the first part of the trilogy ("Irene" in the English translation), which must have been very irritating, since "Alex" would have been rather a spoiler for those who had read it first. However, this is an excellent thriller; there are 3 distinct parts to the book as various twists are revealed, and the pace is very well maintained. I read "Irene" in translation and "Alex" in the original French; I don't think there's anything between the two versions - the English translation of "Irene" ("Travail Soigné" in French) was excellent, and I imagine the translation of "Alex" is of a similar quality, so I would highly recommend both, particularly for fans of authors such as Thomas Harris, Chris Carter or Mark Billingham.

After getting the English version of the book, (as this version is in FRENCH!!) thoroughly enjoyed the story, very different from the norm & ended up actually feeling sorry or Alex. Recommend it.
