A good choice of arias and especially the Exsultate Jubilate with a stunning Alleluja - the voice really lends itself to Mozart and I especially liked the tempo of the Exsultate Jubilate with the recitative taken slowly and very profoundly sung. Worth the buy

Although I had found Cecilia Bartoli's other all-Mozart discCecilia Bartoli Mozart Arias rather disappointing, I decided to buy this one particularly because the programme includes Mozart's famous `Exsultate Jubilate' for which, I believed, Bartoli is just the right singer. In reality, though, it did not match my expectation. The fact is that she and Decca have raised the standards so high in the past few years that these earlier recordings of hers struggle to stand out, not just because of the ever-improving recording quality (bar the retreat from high-definition surround SACDs to standard CDs), or lavish packaging, or informative book(let)s or exploratory choice of the repertoire, but the development of Bartoli's singing which, to my ears, makes her own earlier performances sound rather restrained. So if you are a Cecilia fan you might still find this indeed fine recital of the widely-recorded Mozart pieces (the only `rarity', Davidde Penitente, turned out to be an alternative take of the music Mozart has used in Laudamus te in her Great Mass) very enjoyable. Otherwise, I suspect this is just one fine option among many recordings of these works.

In this recording Cecilia Bartoli provides a sumptuous feast of Mozart's beautiful vocal music. These contrasting arias display passionate drama and exultant rejoicing in the various portraits. There is a gorgeous fullness of tone in the lower register and a lovely delicacy as Bartoli soars to the heights. My only disappointment is that the recitative 'Guinse alfin il momento' is followed by the alternative aria 'Al desio' instead of the familiar 'Deh vieni'...but that simply provides the excuse to buy another CD by the fabulous Cecilia Bartoli!
