This book is a great source of inspiration to aircraft structural designers rather than stress engineers - which has always been the (unique) purpose of the text. The book presents good and modern examples of solving fundamental problems that daily face aircraft structural designers, and has yet to be beaten. Back in the late 1990's, this book was standard issue to Boeing design engineers - what more can be said. In short, a timeless piece of reference for aircraft structural designers. A new century update of this work is awaited with eagerness on all five continents.

This book gives a good introduction to the concepts used in Aircraft design and is an excellent source of easily accessed reference data. It is not a detailed as BRUHN but easily understood.

The author of this book tackle most aspects if not all of aircraft structural design subjects, he starts the topic but never reach to an engineering conclusion that leads to a real structural design methodology. Therefore, you should read it in parallel with the other Niu books for composite airframe structures, and airframe sizing as well as other landing gear design text. Nevertheless, the author was always referring to FEA and real charts and methodologies that are actually used in the industry. There is a good chapter in aircraft structural loading, and engine attachment although the active engine attachment is missing. Obviously the author is having hands on experience in the industry which the reader can benefit a lot.

Needless to mention that Bruhn book: analysis and design of flight vehicles structures is still the leading industry standard, and Niu books are complementary to it.

As such, this book is good to read in parallel with aircraft structural design courses. Also a background in advanced mechanics of materials is needed which is also the prerequisite for any readings in aircraft structural design.

After working in avaiation industry more than 15 years, most of time to be a structure engineer, this is a really excellent book that 1. provide the every aspect structure engineer should be aware of. 2. no complicate math but just simple and direct approach to understand the structure behavior. 3. good description/explanation to make reader catch up the critical points. it gives me what i expected from it. The book is divided into 16 chapters and it helps cover the airframe structural design. The only weakness, the lack of information about Composite structures and Fail-safe Design. I had liked more specific information about these two topics.
