Airfix 1:72 Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR1 aircraft model kit. Developed in the 1960s as the first truly successful V/STOL combat aircraft, the HAwker Siddeley Harrier proved a revelation upon entering service in this, its earliest form, the GR.1. Despite a difficult development period, the Harrier GR.1 matured into an effective close air support machine.
Based predominantly in West Germany to face any potential Eastern Bloc threat, the Harrier force also saw some service in Belize, as well as various goodwill tours around the globe. While the GR.1 never saw any combat, the next version, the GR.3, proved the Harrier's reputation.
The kit also requires Humbrol Enamel paints primary decal scheme (sold separately): 11 silver 14ml, 16 gold 14ml, 27 sea grey 14ml, 33 black 14ml, 35 varnish 14ml, 53 gunmetal 14ml, 61 flesh 14ml, 129 US gull grey 14ml, 155 olive drab 14ml, 163 dark green 14ml, 164 dark sea grey 14ml, 166 light aircraft grey 14ml. Measures 148mm length by 107mm width.

As supplied, the intakes have accurate secondary doors for "landed, engine stopped (upper doors open, lowers closed)" or "aircraft in forward flight (all doors closed, undercarriage up)" modes, but not for an aircraft in the hover, when all 8 doors should be open and the undercarriage down. Ideally, you also want to pose the flaps down about 15 degrees when in this mode, but that should be easy enough to do since the upper/lower wing surfaces are split along the flap (and aileron) hinge line.
Also, this isn't clear from the painting instructions, but the Harrier in the 1970s paint schemes supplied was painted matt, and then the paint over-painted with gloss varnish.
My one reservation is that you only get the box art stores of ADEN pods, 100 gallon tanks and 2 SNEB rocket pods. No bombs or Vinten pod.
Finally, an helpful note; there are a couple of thin plastic strips moulded but not mentioned. These can be fitted to the underside instead of the ADEN pods.
Put simply, this kit is gorgeous. The decal sheet is superb and would likely cost three quarters of the kit price as an after market sheet, the detail of the casting and the parts is awesome, simply awesome with crisp moulding and finely created parts. Option open our closed intake doors on the air intake builfrrs are provided, a cracking looking individually based engine fan can be seen though the intakes instead of the flat ridged disk of the older kits. Fine surface detail, panel lines, various accessories and an armoury to hang under the wings make for one heavily armed kite.
I have heard that the parts fit and build quality is excellent, and the finished item looks better than expected. The extensive decals go on very well with some decal fix from Humbrol. Take my advice though and buy two of these as there are two variants to build and both will look excellent next to each other.
Go on, buy two, you know you want them!!
