Product Description

Product Description

All the episodes from series one to four of Jimmy Perry and David Croft's It Ain't Half Hot Mum, first broadcast in 1974. The series follows the exploits of a Royal Artillery Concert Party during the Second World War. Created by David Croft and Jimmy Perry, it seemed a natural follow-up to their smash hit Dad's Army. Another ensemble piece, it drew on both writers' wartime experience in India and set the action in Deolali: a British army camp 100 miles north-east of Bombay where everyone's gone "a bit doolally".

The concert party is a rag-tag collection of soldiers who'd rather sing, dance and drag up to entertain the troops than be sent forward to the front line. Characters include effeminate drag artist Gunner 'Gloria' Beaumont (Melvyn Hayes); the diminutive Gunner 'Lofty' Willie Sugden (Don Estelle) who possesses a hauntingly beautiful singing voice and ineffectual Colonel Reynolds (Donald Hewlett). However, the show's stand-out personality is the bombastic, eye-rolling Battery Sergeant Major Williams (Windsdor Davies).

If you need cheering up, and aren't too bothered about political correctness, this is for you. British comedy at its best, from the era that really knew how to do it. Farcical characters and situations , coupled with a cast, known and unknown, who could get the best out of the material. Windsor Davies as the typical army Sergeant Major, bawling his gills out at a troup of entertainers, most of whom have no business in the army at all. And Michael Bates playing the archetypal indian bearer to a T. Pick a wet miserable day. Settle down with a beer, and start at series one. You won't go far wrong.

It Ain't Half Hot Mum was a comedy show written by Croft and Perry and told the story of an awful Royal Artillery concert party in the last war stationed in India at first then Burma, the Officers were complete silly arses, and the Sgt. Major was always thinking of ways to get the load of "poofs" as he calls them back into active service.

A very very funny series (I have all eight series now)with such characters as Gunner Lofty Sugden the Singer, Bombadier "Gloria" Beaumont female impersonater, Gunner Parkins (who the Sgt. Major thought was his son)Gunner Graham the music director was an ex Cambridge boy and was ridiculed by the Sgt. Major for talking La De Da...

I would recommend this series to anyone who likes British Classic Comedy.........

Shuttttttt Upppppp!

An excellent remastered collection of the first half of this superb series. The only criticism, two episodes are lost, so the only copies known were from the vaults of Channel 7 in this country. Picture quality is bad for these two episodes. But picture quality of the other twenty-eight episodes is excellent. So if you love this great series, or are a fan of British Comedy from this era, do not hesitate to buy this set. Especially at the great price being offered on Amazon!

This is a series that is somewhat difficult to review as all the plots throughout all the series are based on Gunner Beaumont the "female" lead of a concert party of troops based in India. As Beaumont and some of the others are female impersonators, innuendo as to their sexuality comes fast and furious. In today's climate such innuendo can easily cause offence among the gay community and I imagine it is for this reason that none of the series is ever repeated on the BBC. A shame, as to me it is as funny and stands the test of time as well as 'Dad's Army'. Ex service personnel will find a great many parallels with their own experiences of the Officers v Other Ranks divide. Five stars from me but others may have reservations.

I loved this programme when it was originally aired and it's just as good now. Over the top characters and ridiculous situations but harmless fun.

I always watched It ain't half hot mum when I could when it was first broadcast. Buying this set has been a real joy because I was in the catering & licensed trade and couldn't see every episode. So all these extra episodes as well as somewhat dim memories of those I saw has been a real bonus. The transfer to DVD is spectacular with none of the hiss from tapes which frequently occurs in other series of the time. I found myself laughing harder then I remember previously especially at Windsor Davies as Sgt Major Williams. Michael Bates as the bearer is superb not to mention the stupid first officer. I shall probably buy the rest of the series.
