There are several names that loom large in the early history of blues music, people such as Robert Johnson who popularised and defined the genre. One of these, an indispensable addition to any blues lover's music collection, is Sleepy John Estes. In the 23 recordings on this disc we see the birth of what would become the Chicago blues. There is a definite transition away from traditional country blues towards more cosmopolitan songs that reflect the town/city life of the time (including `Electric Car Blues', a song about a tram, a relatively new phenomenon at the time!)

This collection brings together 23 tracks recorded by Estes in the period 1929-1941. I'm no expert but I gather these are the most popular/important recordings he made in this period. There is a decent set of liner notes with a short description of Estes life and a few notes about each track presented here. The only let down is the sound quality. I realise that some of these tracks were transferred from 80 yr old `78s, but there is a lot of scratches, pops and hiss on some of the tracks. Compared to the restoration of, say, Louis Armstrong tracks from the same era these don't sound brilliant. This really is a minor point though, it adds to the atmosphere, and the musicianship and singing of Estes still shine through.

A thoroughly enjoyable set of early blues, recommended for all serious blues fans.

Blues lovers will already know all about Mr Estes but if you're new to him he's one of the greats of acoustic style blues.
