There is no luck involved really, but every game is different as the players react to each other's moves, try out new strategies, and try to plan ahead. Do you focus on cheap-and-cheerful sheep, of which there are many? Or are you planning a high-end stud farm? Start building now, or collect stuff first? Is it worth upgrading the old farm? And why did the other person just take that pile of wood, they must have known I needed it grrrr...
I think this will appeal to anyone who is looking for a lighter-weight resource management board game, in terms of time to learn and play, and physically. Or someone who wants to get a sense of the large Agricola before jumping in.
It's nicely made for such a small game, the wooden animal counters are cute - beware if you become too attached to one type, this might make you predictable :). It's portable, a good size to bring along on holiday. The games are also short -- half an hour or so -- with a limited number of turns, so it's a good play if you fancy a game but really ought to be getting to bed, though this easily turns into "let's make it best of three", then "best of five" etc...
There's plenty of value for such a small game. For me the only down side is that it's limited to two players. It would be good to be able to play with more, though I suppose you could buy two sets and just double up on the resources available and halve the number of turns. Or you could play in teams.
* Looks nice
* Quick to learn
* Quick to play - under an hour for beginners, half that once you've played a few times
* Has quite a lot of depth for such a small game, and has an expansion available
* 2 players only
My only criticism are that the rules are confusing and at times almost misleading - they need close re-reading even after you have played the game a few times - just to check you are doing it correctly.
The only thing that is a bit hard to wrap your head around is the scoring - the chart on the side of the box is invaluable.
