Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Age Of Empires II has been a big hit for Microsoft on the PC for some time and now it's made it to the PS2. The biggest question to be answered with any strategy game of this kind is whether or not the developers have managed to get the user interface right; while it's been pretty well executed it's still not perfect and does make life difficult at times. However, one excellent feature of the PS2 removes all the potential interface problems: just buy yourself a USB mouse and you have the perfect tool for playing.

Gameplay basically revolves around you building up and defending your settlement, but don't expect to be left to your own devices for long. As with all strategy games, you'll need to gather resources, build more advanced structures and gain access to more powerful troops with which to raid and pillage enemy settlements. The range of units is good and varies between the many cultures you can choose to be, giving each culture their own distinct advantages and disadvantages.

The graphics and sound in Age of Empires 2 are both perfectly serviceable, but you won't be astounded by either. So what does it have in its favour? Well, heaps and heaps of playability. This is no five-minute wonder, and you'll be back again and again for just one more shot at that mission you haven't quite finished yet. If you're looking for a top-notch strategy game for the PS2, you couldn't go far wrong by getting yourself a copy of AOE2--and don't forget your mouse. --Andi Flower --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Crucial decisions must be made on the allocation of resources, technology planning and military development. Travel through time on your ambitious path of victory by seizing control of enemy civilizations and building and defending wonders of the world. Age of Empires II successfully recreates the epic nature of the original and pushes the real time strategy genre to astounding limits for both real time strategy fans and loyal followers of the original smash hit PC game. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

I had never played this game on the PC, so can't compare the handling of the mouse vs controller. On the whole I found it fairly easy to navigate my way around the screen.
The beauty of this game are all the possibilities, levels of difficulty, environments and cultures to choose from. Also the actual games to choose are varied, from regicide(kill the opposing king while protecting your own), death match(which team can beat the other) and campaigns, this latter option you can choose to go through a series of challenges set within a certain time frame; such as Joan Of Arc, William Wallace, Saladin etc...
The hours just fly past when you get playing. Really entertaining gameplay! The only real downpoint is not getting to experience each "age" for very long, or getting to survey how wonderful your settlement looks for long, such is the fast pace of the gameplay. Also the dopey village farmers get a little annoying, having to be ordered the whole time to get planting again....not much intelligence from that quarter! On the whole 4 stars!

I was quite anxious when i ordered this game as the reviews on the site were quite mixed and i had never played a strategy game like this before. I have to say though i love it, hours have disappeared as i play this and i have only been playing the random map games. Once you get used to using the controller it's great.
I can't recommend this game highly enough and i am now keen to find other strategy games on this platform so if anyone knows of any then let me know.

Following the success of their Age of Empires series on the PC Microsoft decided to chance their luck with console version, and whilst the results were a mixed bag for the first part, this second instalment is not too bad. Ironing out some of the problems that dogged the first part, Age of Empires 2 sees many of the bugs ironed out, an improved tutorial, better multi-player capability and some decent campaigns.

Overall, a very enjoyable game that squirrels away the hours.

A really good role playing game...allowing you to play God over a race of people!! Build them up to war or make peace. A wide variety of challenges await from open conflict to trading. The game plays smooth and the graphics are clear and crisp. Its easy to spend a few hours just playing away at one scenario.

Maybe this game is good on the PC, but it is a serious let down on the PS2. The Graphics are average, and unless you have a Mouse and Keyboard the standard Controller makes game play a nightmare.
If you are thinking about buying this game, rent it first so you know what you are getting.

AOE II is a world apart from its predecessor. Improvements include: move your camera view with the game paused, 75 units in campaign and map edited games, 100 plus in others, improved seige equipment, castles and battlements, plus 13 unique castle units, 1 for each civilization, the best one being... (see Genghis Kharn campaign). Of the 5 campaigns the best is the Genghis Kharn and the worst is Barbarossa after the brilliant part 1, thereafter...! The best "Deathmatch" maps are Black forest and Highland with water seperation. Points & Timed victory games should be avoided as the game will be over before its really started. NB. 1 game took 10 hours to complete and I scored 200,00 points. Problems include: Seige onagers that do not operate as point and cut-forestation-once the game has been saved, and the inability to have your villagers cut down specific forestation from top to bottom. For a real challenge take on 2 different enemy armies, with full technology trees...!

Great, but the voices are terribly pathetic and border on racist. On the other hand, it takes so much time to play just one game that one's mind doesn't have time to wander to (and wonder about) anything else - my alibi for leaving the food burn.
