An odd film made when Michael Powell retreated to Australia, following the controversy surrounding his Peeping Tom film. This film is influenced by Shakespears The Tempest in theme (which was apparently an unfullfilled dream project of Powell's), and is a colourful and effervescent little film in which a wondefully crusty James Mason plays an artist going to live on a supposedly deserted island to paint some masterpieces. Instead there is an assortment of odd bods about, the most devine being Helen Mireen (her film debut?). He is tempted by her, and how could he not be. Never has an actress been so comfortable looking on screen whilst nude. Her glorious natural assets make the current silicon set look quite ridiculous. This is not a Powell masterpiece, but a personal favourite. Filmed on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

I first saw this film at high school age, back in 1968. The director had updated a Norman Lindsay story to the then modern setting of a Great Barrier Reef island. I now live in this area and know that the simple rustic charm of the backdrop and people of this film belong to the past, but this does not detract from seeing the film again. It has a light hearted touch and is never too far from a gentle eroticism that does not stray beyond naughtiness. Helen Mirren in one of her very first screen roles is delightful as the free spirit island girl who naturally becomes the muse for the artist getting away from it all on the island.
This is not a deep or very serious film, which is all the more reason for still retaining its ability to be a good movie matinee experience. Transfer to DVD from old film stock results in some grain, but the quality and colours are generally very good.

What a film, Hellen Mirren shows off not only good acting, but becomes a marvellous co star to James Masons acting.
A believable story with dramatics and sadness in places, but overall brilliance at its best.

I am very glad I have been able to obtain a dvd copy which Iwill always treasure.

This long awaited release is an utter disappointment, not for the picture quality - which is crisp and bright, but for the unforgivable way in which the picture has been chopped in order to con the public into believing they are getting the original aspect ratio as seen at the cinema when in fact all they are getting is the pan & scanned 4:3 ratio which has been further butchered by masking off about a 6th of the bottom of the picture to make it fit the so-called 'widescreen' TV ratio of 16:9.
If a movie is filmed in 'cinemascope' then it should be released as that - in true 'letterbox' format & not the all too common cheap option of butchering further an already cropped picture.
Another wasted opportunity sacrificed upon the altar of the 'quick buck'. PATHETIC

This is about a famous artist going to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and really just for a break at first . But he soon meets up with a girl who is living with her mother in an old shack . The artist played by James Mason sees something in her that makes him pick up his brushes and starts painting . Producing some great work and falling for the girl a young beautiful Helen Mirren. I think she was about 24 when the film was made and what a beauty she was/is. I enjoyed this and I remember seeing it when it was released in 1969, but had forgotten the story . Great stuff .

In spite of the scandalous looking title, "Age of Consent" is not about a woman losing her virginity or a lolita-type relationship (because Helen Mirren looks underage the same way that Anne Hathaway looks underage). "Age of Consent" is simply about an artist (James Mason) searching for his artistic inspiration in Australia and finally finding his very own muse named Cora (Helen Mirren) who does a lot of naked posing for him.

Now if you are looking for a thought provoking or profound film about the human condition, "Age of Consent" is not for you. But if you already had a few beers on a Friday night and are looking for some light entertainment with a bit of charm, then this film is just right. "Age of Consent" has everything you (as one of the guys) would want to see in a film after getting drunk: a funny dog (Godfrey, who almost steals the show), a naked 24 year old Helen Mirren, lots of nature, some amusing locals, a naked 24 year old Helen Mirren, more nature, marine life and oh yes, getting to see 24 year old Helen Mirren nude! It is not a masterpiece, but I have to admit I watched "Age of Consent" to the end.

This is not a "great" film but is full of wonderful images of the Great Barrier Reef and also shows the sheer sexuality of "La Mirren" before, I suspect, even she knew that she had it. It is a dynamic film which develops slowly and really goes nowhere (all contradictions, I realise..).
The film is worth watching in toto once but otherwise good for the scenery - the Reef and Mirren.
