Age of Aztec by James Lovegrove is the fourth novel in his Pantheon series (which also includes a novella I haven't read yet), that do not share characters or setting, but instead a common fantastical conceit - what if Gods were real? So far he has worked his way through the Ancient Egyptian, Greek, Norse, and now Aztec pantheons.
The Aztec empire has, by the year 2012 (in the suppressed Gregorian calendar), conquered the whole world using God-provided high technology, and rules a bloody police state held together by torture and human sacrifice. One man is standing up to them, slaughtering priests at the most public of occasions, dressed in the armour of the old enemies of the Aztec Empire - the Conquistador.
This was an enjoyable read but perhaps the formula is getting a little stale now - the first three books all had distinct tones, but this one feels like a cross between the first two entries (Age of Zeus and Age of Ra). The lead characters are also rather stock - psychologically damaged ex-military/police. Lovegrove can still write some excellent action scenes, but nothing to match the power-armoured-grunts-vs-Gods battles of Zeus.
So fun, but maybe it's time for the author to take a break from this series and try something new.

The first half was terrific, then it fell apart and stopped being an alternate view of our world and became something altogether different. Without giving away the ending, I have to say it was really disappointing and, in my opinion, lazy.

For me, James' Age series is one that not only rode into a new direction but is one that has set the standard for others to follow. The writing is phenomenal, the use of the deities inspired and when he added human characters that are the pawns, it really brought the whole thing to life for me as a reader.

The writing really took me to the world he generated and with the action, dark deeds which when backed with a wonderful sense of pace, it made it a title that pretty much didn't get anywhere other than the top of my TBR pile. Finally add to this, some wonderful author sleight of hand, characters that you could really get behind which when backed by his authors understanding of what the readers wants as well as needs and all in this was a title that didn't live to see the sunrise.

I'd already read the sneak peak that Amazon offers so I knew that I would like this book.
As a final year University Student I had not been able to get my teeth into many books that I actually wanted to read. This Book however was read in the space of a day. A page turner and another Brilliant book from Lovergrove.

I would recommend this book for those who love militry/scifi and alternate history.

Corker and just like the rest of his pantheon series does not let down.

Read this and read the rest of the stand alones!

OK - I'll start by saying that this series isn't going to be for everyone, but if you like mythology and action then you have come to the right place. Strangely enough, I disagree with one of the other reviewers here in that I thought it started a bit slow but then got a lot better half way through. The action just becomes relentless and Lovegrove's imagination and view of ancient Gods is simply enthralling (any chance of Dagda in the next one?).

I honestly didn't think that he would manage to top Age of Zeus... but hats off.. he did. Keep 'em coming!
