This book is simply gorgeous, I loved every moment of it's lush and deceptively straightforward narrative. It has an almost almost fable like quality as the beautifully drawn but gradually revealed characters learn about the harsh realities of life.Agatta evokes the smokey and often murky side of New Orleans in a kind of southern 'Crimson Petal and the White' But without the White! The pragmatic choices made by the characters add to the richness of their lives as well as the tragedies. The pacing is wonderful, evoking the slow and sinuous pace of a New Orleans dripping with both lust and love. At times Agatta was so damn good it put me in mind of 'Their Eyes were watching God' by Zora Neale Hurston. But it is not a pastiche of either of the novels I have mentioned , simply on a parr with them which is great recommendation.

This book tells the story of Agatta, a young girl who after a tragedy becomes a prostitute.

This book comes under the banner of Christian but in reality much of it is far from being Christian such as the overly explicit sex scenes which can be quite shocking.

The characters are well written but the story is very dis-jointed at times and hard to follow.

Finally the ending comes very abruptly such that I turned the page as it felt uncomplete.

Very glad I got this for free as it isn't worth paying for.

HASH(0x92dc93cc) out of 5 stars Extremely Sexually Graphic 11 Sept. 2012
By Janie Belle - Published on Amazon.com

I found this book while doing a search for christian fiction. I have read other christian novels that dealt with prostitution in a very tasteful way. While the book is not badly written, I do want to let other readers know that this book is very graphic and I have deleted it from my library.

HASH(0x9176b4d4) out of 5 stars A Great Read!!!! 31 July 2010
By booklover2010 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is a wonderful book! Agatta is the tale of a Black woman in turn of the century New Orleans who finds herself through self acceptance and the love of a man that many may despise. This is not a typical love story, it is filled with unexpected twists and turns! I had never heard of this author before, but I will definitey be buying her future books. I think we have another future Toni Morrison in the making!

HASH(0x91905804) out of 5 stars A Really Great Love Story 29 Sept. 2012
By Tracey Bailey - Published on Amazon.com

I was really surprised by this book. I have never heard of this author, but I must say, I loved her interpretation! I discovered the book trough the free books advertised by Pixels of ink and was pleasently surprised. Although not a typical hearts and flowers love story, it was a love story nonetheless. I thought the characters were realistic, loving and flawed. That's what made it such a great story! The story made me laugh, get angry, frighten and even cry. I think it was very well done and I look forward to greatness from this author!

HASH(0x93253c0c) out of 5 stars Not What I expected! 29 Sept. 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

For a love story, this was very different. Agatta is a prostitute who manages to find love. Not everyone agrees on her love choice, but she sees the good in a man, when eveyone else can only see the bad. Even after an unexpected injury, caused as a result of her love interests life style, Agatta still manages to find not also love, but a relationship with the Lord as well.

This book was interesting enough to hold my attention, but there where times when frustration set it. I would definatley recomend this book as a good read!
HASH(0x91913294) out of 5 stars Disappointed... 1 July 2014

I wish I had read the previous reviews before starting the book. While I found the story intriguing, I was caught off guard by the descriptions of sexual encounters. I actually came back to make sure I hadn't made a mistake because I was looking specifically for Christian content. Some might find the descriptions to be "mild", but I consider them too graphic for a Christian novel and for my own conscious. There may be a redemptive message in there somewhere, and I'm disappointed that I didn't get far enough to see it. However, I, too, have deleted the book.
