I had very mixed feelings about this one. Steven Seagal in a horror film? AGAINST THE DARK is an OK zombie/mutant horror film with strong echoes from 28 DAYS (WEEKS) LATER and DOOMSDAY (some similarities just can't be denied), it does have a bit of an eerie setting, BUT...
- the story is PAPER-THIN (the script to this film probably didn't fill an entire page)
- this is the first Seagal movie where I REALLY got the impression Steven didn't want to be in the film AT ALL. It shows (and I've seen ALL his films, it never showed like this - they got Seagal to play in the movie, but obviously they could not convince him to play WELL...)
- Steven walks around, does 2 or 3 finishing moves and gives an order here or there, THAT'S ALL HE DOES! The main fighting is done by OTHERS. Plus he's only in the film altogether for approx. 10 MINUTES!!!
- very many plot holes and logic booboos
Normally this would be a 1 star film, but an extra star for a halfway descent atmosphere (at least they got that right, but probably by accident). Pity.
Filmed in Romania.

Awful. Dull, plodding rubbish with a star who is seldom on-screen. Tedious characters wandering around the same corridors in repeat shot after shot. Not even worth having for free. A real struggle to sit through this for the full running time. Be glad that I did, so you won't have to!

My son bought me this film for Father's Day as I collect vampire movies but I don't know if it even qualifies. The blurb on the box calls them vampires, in the film they are referred to as 'the infected' or mutants and in the credits they are listed as zombies. From that you can take it that they're a combination of all three monsters.
Sadly the biggest monster here is this film, the best things you can say about it are that it is only 90 minutes long and you can buy it second hand from Amazon for a penny.
It is set in a near future where a virus has decimated most of the population and the survivors struggle to survive in the wreckage. Well most of them because near the end there is an out of place and irrelevant cut scene showing free flowing traffic in a city at night, why? Same goes for the scene where a woman is filing her teeth to points. Whoa, here comes a big bad to watch. Nope, that's it, she files her teeth and you never see her again. Why? What is going on?
Back to the plot, a group of survivors break into a hospital in search of medicine and meet two people who are hiding out there amongst the infected. Strolling around outside is Seagal and his little band of hunters all dressed in black leather and coming to the rescue? Eventually yes but most of the time they stroll.
Anyway this hospital appears to be the biggest hospital in the world because even allowing for half an hour of poor dialogue and action it takes them an hour to get from the fourth floor to the basement where they have to get to the security door to escape before the generator gives up and it won't open. Hold on; what about the window they climbed in originally? Its on the ground floor and I never saw them go upstairs. What about Seagal's point of entry? See what I mean?

Avoid if you have even the smallest thought to watch and see if it's really is that bad.
You have been warned, save 90 minutes of your life.......

Vampires, I don't think so. More like a hybrid between vampires (10%) and zombies (90%).
It can be the only film where there rescue people only to let them walk off and get attacked again. They don't even care when one of the girls in their own team get taken. The acting (especially Seagals) is terrible.

From his first movie, Above the Law (aka Nico), Steven Seagal has always been the star of his movies (with the exception of Executive Decision where he had a cameo). "Against the Dark" breaks the trend. It's not really a "Steven Seagal movie" but rather an average B-grade post-apocalyptic zombie movie featuring Steven Seagal, in a heroic role of course, but with limited screen time.

Those hoping for an action movie with Seagal as the star may be disappointed, but taken for what it is, a postapocalyptic horror movie, I think it works pretty well, and Seagal is a bonus. There are worse ways to spend an hour and a half.

This ramul is one of the only three Seagal films that I think are unforgivably poor. Now, if you have read some of my other reviews, you will know I am a loyal Seagal fan. So it pains me to put some of his films down. But I am afraid I simply can't say anything positive about Against The Dark. It is bloody awful. It is a rip off Blade with Seagal fighting a group of blood (c**k) sucking vampires. I always say that there is a place for direct to DVD stuff, but in this case, the place is the bottom of the S***er after you have wiped your back side on it. It's the cheapest load of crap I have ever seen. It even makes crap Seagal films like, Attack Force and Flight Of Fury look like oscar winners. Maybe not, but it's defiantly the worst film I can say I have waisted my eyesight on. I will never get that time back. Why must Seagal make this sort of s***e. Seagal is not suited to this kind of film and is capable of much better. Stick to the shady cop roles you are used to mate. Look at the recent True Justice series. That is exactly what Seagal is good at. I do realise I am only talking to Seagal fans here.

Against The Dark will not satify any Seagal fan, that I am sure. He hardly does anything in the film. Or even says anything. He just roams around in the dark with a long black coat on and a sword. To be honest, the back shots of him are a double, and not a good one. It could have been Jimmy Saville with dyed hair, hanging around looking for his next victim in the shadows. Segals voice is dubbed at times by someone who sounds nothing like him. I want to know the dim wit who employs these cretins. And why can't Seagal do his own looping. That says it all, even he can't be bothered. Who is this filmed aimed at, and who thinks is good. I am no film snob, and like a wide range of stuff.
