I admit - I just looked up the author, saw the title of a new book coming out soon and pre-ordered it automatically. I have all Vincenzi's book, have loved them - until now. But unfortunately I did not check what this one was about, nor the length of it.

A slim book arrived. 179 pages, of which 133 were short stories. The rest 46 were articles and interviews with the author.

The short stories were far from the quality of Vincenzi's novels. Very light, sort of on the surface, which never managed to get under my skin. The rest, personal stuff, was ok but I had not bought a book about the author's personal life and her viewpoints. I had wanted, and expected, one of her fat, fantastic treats of a novel. One of the usual highlights of my reading year. Being a faithful admirer and buyer of all her work, I felt cheated and could not keep wondering if this was an easy way to make money.

I still hope Vincenzi will write proper novels in future but I will be certain both to check the topic of the book and number of pages.

Whilst the short stories were vey good I felt short changed as there were not many of them. The book also contained some of Penny's journalistic articles and these I found boring. It would have been better to have more short stories. If you haven't bought this yet wait for it to come out in paperback when the kindle price should also reduce.

I'm sorry to say that l was disappointed, with the short stories l felt that l was just getting in to the story and it finished, l have bought every book written by P.V in hard back as couldn't wait, but if you haven't bought this book l would wait for the paperback or library. L'm going to try an get my money back.

The short stories are good but a lot of the book is an autobiography and that is not what I thought I was buying, poor value for money took just 2 hours to read cover to cover.

Fans of Penny Vincenzi's novels will know that she usually serves up huge, sweeping stories that span generations and are usually at least 600 pages long, and often around the 800 page mark. I adore her novels, they are the absolute perfect escape from daily life and usually feature glamour and glitz. I got a surprise when her latest book, Love In The Afternoon and other delights dropped through my letter box a couple of weeks ago. As always, the cover is beautiful, it's pure Vincenzi, but it's so slim! Just under 200 pages.

Love In The Afternoon was published by Headline on 14 February 2013 and is a collection of ten short stories, some articles about life in general and then, at the back, a glimpse of her new novel. I have something of love/hate relationship with short stories. When they are done well, I love them, but must admit that generally I tend to feel a little let down by them. I wondered just how Penny Vincenzi would fare, a short story is a long way from her trademark lengthy novels and she acknowledges in her Introduction how difficult it can be to write a successful short story.

In my view, Penny Vincenzi really has no need to worry. Unlike other collections of short stories, there were none of these that I wanted to skip, none of them that I didn't enjoy and each one was a satisfying read. I really love Vincenzi's world - she always creates characters that seem so realistic, even if they tend to live in a world of glamour and beauty and luxury. These stories are all themed around love, but are not all romantic. They explore every emotion that can be associated with a love affair, from jealousy to lies to passion and as the title of the collection indicates, they really are a delight to read.

A pleasant and unchallenging read. A book to relax with a pot of tea and feet up on sofa. Relaxing.

Penny Vincenzi never disappoints and her stories are always delights to read whether in the afternoon or whatever time of day.
The short stories are pleasant and enjoyable and interesting too in Penny's skilled way of telling the tale.
Each story is about the lives of characters who are totally credible and who we can all relate to in one way or another. I especially liked The Best Table, Glass Slipper, The Beach Hut and The Brooch. Life lessons revealed so cleverly in each.
The other half of this delightful little book is all about Penny's life, career and family. Her working life has been varied and very interesting - I was surprised to read of her work as a secretary for Marje Proops...I mean who hasn't heard of and admired the great Marje Proops?
I have been a fan of Penny's for many years now, and I rush to grab her newest addition to the collection as soon as it hits the book shop shelves (nowadays online at Amazon), and I have no hesitation in recommending this little beauty to anyone who wants a happy, light but interesting read.

I have several of this author's books in hardback. I did not know she also wrote short stories, but I was going on holiday and it seemed a good choice to take. I was right, it was lovely and I am glad I own it I can recommend to any reader who enjoys short stories..
These are all different, which is an added attraction
