One of the reasons this humane and carefully crafted book is so readable is that the author celebrates ordinariness and childishness even as he chronicles terrible cruelty. But prepare for shock and tears. (Nicolette Jones (on Then, children's book of the week) Sunday Times)
Haunting . . . dangerous and desperate, but also full of courage and hope. (Guardian on Once)
[Morris Gleitzman] has accomplished something extraordinary. (Meg Rosoff)

Be aware that being books about the second world war, deaths and killings do occur however in my experience written in a manner with which my child can cope. She has gained an insight into the war in a way that interests her and frequently asks me questions of the back of what she has been reading. Highly recommended series.
I follow the men to the forest, they are standing around a railway line and I run over to them asking them not to hurt him, suddenly Gabriek grabs me there is a huge explosion, Gabriek and the men run down a slope firing at the soldiers on the wrecked train, Gabriek explains that he helps the Partisans sometimes, we arrive home to find the farm burning, we have to wait for soldiers to leave then we rush in, Gabriek to the house and me to the barn to save Dom, when I am out the farm house is collapsing and Gabriek is hurt, I manage to get him on Dom and go off to find the Partisans, two bikes appear, Mr Pavel the leader and the woman, they agree to take Gabriek to a doctor but tell me to get lost, I ask to join and they agree but I have to get my own gun, Yuli the woman tells me to go to town
Gabrieks present is a compass, Yuli shows me how to kill, in the town everyone was in the market square to witness a hanging, I hurry off to the outskirts, lots of Jews are marching by with Nazi guards, I hide and hear footsteps but this time it is a Hitler Youth of my own age going home after parking his bike, the bike has two Bazooka's attached to it so I steal it, I take them to Mr Pavel and I am a Partisan, they take me to some underground bunkers in the forest, Gabriek has gone for an operation, Dr Zajak is in charge
Gabriek is taken to the main camp to recover, I want to go with him but Mr Pavel says I am to be the doctor's assistant, I am woken in the night by the doctor to help him, one man is screaming with a leg wound and another man has a stomach wound, the doctor deals with the stomach wound and I am told to deal with the knee, I don't do very well I can't see properly because my glasses are cracked, Yuli takes me to a bunker where food, and bodies awaiting burial are kept, they had just raided a supply convoy but all there was were the things taken from the Jews before they were killed, Yuli found me a coat and new glasses, later I help the doctor with an amputation and he is pleased with me
On a mission Yuli has been shot in the shoulder when she is better we go on a mission together, we arrive at a town during an air raid, I look for food and Yuli disguises herself and goes to Nazi headquarters, I look in the bombed out houses and find three Jewish girls who had been in hiding, while looking for food two Hitler Youth boys point a rifle at me, one of them is the boy I stole the Bazooka's from, the sister of one of the boys steps forward and shows me hundreds of cans but no can opener, Felix shows them how to open the tins for half of them
As the book continues, Yuli finds plans to attack the Partisan camp, Felix is sent to an Island in a swamp for safety, everyone at the bunker is dead including the doctor, Mr Pavel is hanged, Felix takes all the children to his Island, we decide to wreck a German train, Hitler kills himself and there is a slim chance his parents were alive, Felix travels with the Russians to find his parents camp, what does Felix find after his long journey and what is his future, one of four books in the series, excellent well worth a read
