...Ever since she was a girl, Faith Devlin had worshipped stunning, sophisticated Gray Rouillard. They could not be more different. Gray's father practically owns the small town of Prescott, and in her young girl's dreams, Gray is a knight in shining Armour. That hero's image is shattered in one shattering night that is forever to change the lives of both Gray and Faith. He was all things good, bright and wonderful - until the night he throws Faith and her dirt-poor family out into the streets. Gray's father, a notorious womaniser has finally gone over the edge and left his family, disappearing into the night with his lover - none other than Faith's mother. When Gray discovers this, he takes out his uncontrollable rage upon Faith's and the rest of her family, evicting them from Rouillard land in the middle of the night.
It was a memory that was to form the rest of Faith's life. Now she lives for only one reason, to return to Prescott and finally solved what happened to Gray's father and her mother. No longer the small town girl from a family of white trash, Faith has worked very hard to make something of herself. And the time has finally come for Faith to go home. Faith did not expect Prescott to welcome her back with open arms, and she is not disappointed. Faith is the living image of her mother and in a small town people only remember all too well her mother destroyed the Rouillard marriage. But she is mildly surprised to the lengths people will go to please the now powerful Gray. She is asked to leave a motel, the police harass her, and the grocery store owner refused to even sell her groceries.

i have read a few linda howard books before, but without a shadow of doubt this surpasses the rest. Howard, herself, describes it as one of her personal favourites!

story: faith Devilin is a poor, outcast child in Prescott, louisiana, who has always adored Gray Rouilliard. However Gray plans to use his power to ruin faith and her family despite his affection for her.
Gray's father, Guy Rouilliard is having a well known affair with Faith's mother Renee. Renee and Guy fail to return home to their families one night, whom presume that they have ran away together. In his rage Gray tells the Devilin family they must leave his land by nightfall. Twelve years later Faith comes back to Prescott to prove she is not "white Trash" and like her family, and is rather a upstanding business women (she own's her own travel company). However, Gray and his family do not want Faith in Prescott. Gray tries to use his influence to get her to leave. At the same time as this faith tries to learn what actually happened to Guy and Renee. this is proven not only a hard task but a possibly life threating one.

i found this book amazing. after the first chapter the book was fast paced throughout. i really couldnt put it down, and stayed well past my usual bedtime to finish the book. i am glad i read some of Howards other books first as i fear they would not have appeared as good in comparison to this one. So far this is the best book i have read of Howards. there are several twists and intense moments throughout the book, and the characters are diverse. i really liked the way Faith's character grew from the shy timid girl to a stong fearless women, that still however shows her vulnerable side at times.for me this book is a total keeper!!!

Well written and terrific to read. I loved this one very much. Linda Howard always writes with such depth that the characters become almost real. If you enjoy reading a more gritty romance then you will love this one. I couldn't put it down.

I'm in the minority with this one... I'm wasn't convinced that it was a genuine romance between them. Lust, yes but not Love. I can only remember him being explicitly cruel ( I don't think he made it up to her enough) and her reasons for moving back weren't a strong enough argument for me either. I like that Faith made something of herself especially with her awful upbringing and I enjoyed the writing, the content just didn't quite do it for me.

This is my favourite Linda Howard book.
I've found in many of her books that her heroine has been annoyingly weak and fall to pieces when the so-called hero is being an arse.
In this book, the characters are strong, the plotline good and the chemistry electric.

Have skim-read it many a time, as of course once you know 'who dunnit' you won't want to read the book in full again.

However, for the first time read it is superb!!!

This has to be my favourite Linda Howard novel. Like `Mr perfect` this is a perfect combination between thriller and chick lit. The relationship between the two main characters Is fiery and passionate, keeping my highly entertained. The story continues to keep you on the edge of your seat and keep guessing. Enjoy!

I bought this book because it really divides readers. It's a Love or Hate book with seemingly very little middle ground. The hero Gray actually turns up continously on message boards as an abusive Alpha jerk with Faith portrayed as a doormat.
Personally I loved it - Faith is a lovely strong heroine with hints of vulnerability but without that in you face atitude that some heroines now have. Gray is definitely an alpha male, powerful, rich and sexy but with a need to protect his family that clashes with his need for Faith.

Linda Howard is a genius at describing all that happened leading up to that night and we're horrified for Faith as her world comes crashing down - her mother disappears, the family is kicked out of their shack and the younger kids are abandoned. At the same time while we can't condone Gray for kicking the family out we do understand how tired, angry, scared and then goaded he saw red and set in motion those events.

Twelve years later both leads get a chance to change the others perception of themselves and make peace with their pasts.

A keeper on my bookshelf.
