This is a great record, showcasing early Crowdies songs through to some of the last material recorded. Some tracks have featured as B-sides in some form, others are unreleased officially but have featured in live shows over the years. 95% is top-class, comprising the usual lovely melodies and slightly off-beat lyrics. Paul Hester's "My Telly's Gone Bung" is thrown in too and well illustrates the drummer's sense of humour, if not his songwriting prowess. And an added bonus is the stripped-back mix of "Private Universe" - a lot of the layers from the 'Together Alone' album version are removed, revealing the beautiful acoustic guitar work beneath.
If you're a first time buyer, get Together Alone first, then Woodface, Temple Of Low Men and finally the debut Crowded House. Or get the Best Of if you must. Then get Afterglow.

"Afterglow" is an album of rare Crowded House tracks and was released after the band broke up. Overall the album showcases the talents of a truly unique and original band merely by the fact that the tracks they deemed were unworthy of being included on their albums are really as good as anything they had ever released. The majority of the album features tracks that were recorded during the "Woodface" sessions, so their greatness does not come as a surprise as "Woodface" was one of the bands best albums. The album is quite brilliant, with it's overall sound being typical of the laid back rock tracks that has characterised the rest of their albums, however although this slow rock is the base for the album's sound, the album does get more innovative and creative and you see the band taking a lot more risks, than they did on any of their official releases. The highlights of the album include "You Can Touch", "Anyone Can Tell", "Recurring Dream", "I Am In Love" and "Private Universe", which are tracks that would've been a welcome addition to any Crowded House album. Overall it's a great album and is a must for any fan of the band or any fan of good rock music

Having been a follower of Neil Finn right back to the Split Enz era, I was intrigued by the realease of these so-called B-sides and cast-offs. I needn't have been so apprehensive. The Finn talent shines through.
From the opening song "I Am In Love", through to "Time Immemorial", this album is all that we have come to expect from the Finn family's pen. The only exception is possibly "My Telly's Gone Bung", but even that little ditty has a way of recalling itself on the drive home from work.
There are some classics - notably "Help Is Coming", "Recurring Dream" and "Left Hand", and the link back to the Split Enz days cannot be denied on "Lester" and the addictive "Dr Livingstone".
One is left feeling that with this quality of material being 'left out', the world is a poorer place without Crowded House.

As Pete Paphides described it, this album in the dying throes of Crowded House's career, offers something nostalgic, wearied, teNader and fragile. I had followed Crowded House through their tenure in the sun, but lost this album, only to realise it with the release of ' Help is Coming' to support the Save the Children refugee campaign. It is gorgeous and well worth discovering.

This is a great ablum to finish off anyone's Crowded House collection. This is a 2 CD set, the second CD is a Neil Finn interview, where he goes through the reasons for including the songs on CD1.
As Neil says, most of the songs would have been released on albums before, but they always seemed to have too many songs for inclusion, so inevitably some had to be dropped. Don't think of these songs as inferior, because they aren't.

The strength of the material on this album is such that anyone listening could be forgiven for thinking that it was an album recorded in its own right.

When you hear about such compilations, you know that some of the tracks are going to be duff throw-aways - b-sides that weren't good enough for an album release or discarded tracks which were scrapped with good reason. However, this worthy and enjoyable collection of songs doesn't fall into this bracket. All the songs here are worthy of inclusion on merit alone.

If you like Crowded House, then give it a go.

Being a recent newcomer to all that is Crowded House, and in an effort to obtain a complete collection of CH albums, this CD is where all my Christmas money ended up. From the opening drum beats of "I Am In Love" to the closing notes of "Time Immemorial" this collection of CH's unreleased recordings is sure to delight old Crowdies and newcomers alike. Neil's songs are as inspirational as ever, and the band's musical talent really shines through. This is the kind of music that you can listen to repeatedly and never get bored of.

Traditionally, such albums as this contain little more than quirky insights into what artisits did when they were short on inspiration, merely providing some mild amusement for only the most die-hard fans. This album is different though, as Neil Finn's incredible songwriting talent means his rejects are more than enough to sustain the careers of other, lesser songsmiths. Here we have some wonderful songs - "I Love You Dawn", "Time Immemorial", "Help Is Coming" and "I Am In Love" are from the same stable as "Don't Dream It's Over", and no less thoroughbred; "Sacred Cow", "Anyone Can Tell", "Recurring Dream" and "You Can Touch" all possess that incredible ability to sit in your head all day, and yet be welcome guests; "Left Hand", "My Telly's Gone Bung", "Lester" and "Dr Livingston" are in the same quirky vein as "Sister Madly" and "Kill Eye"; whilst for good measure, there's a less fussy version of the beautiful "Private Universe". Personally, I don't realy like "Dr Livingston" or "Lester", but otherwise, this is an album well worth buying, and it's a worthy addition to anyone's CD collection, not just those of existing fans.
