I have no doubt in my mind that the writing of this marvelous, intricately woven story was a labor of love for Melodie Ramone. Throughout my entire read, there was an undercurrent of harmonious love that bolstered a roller-coaster ride of life events, many of them calamitous for the characters. I resonated with the fierceness of spirit in Silvia; her ability to step towards love and, in so doing, discover within herself the resilience needed to cope with a kind of life she never had expected.
Ms. Ramone was superb in her scripting of the subtleties inherent in relationships between the characters. I so enjoyed the segments that presented the nuances involved during emotionally charged interactions between the characters, for the author wove intricate glimpses into their opposing perceptions. I became emotionally engaged during Silvia's dilemmas relating to her father and sister, Oliver's twin brother, Alexander, and especially during her own times of introspection.
AFTER FOREVER ENDS is one of those great slice-of-life stories that deserves to have enough reading time available so as to be savored. My decision to hold off reading until I could have more free time to read was a good one. It is indeed a love story. Each phase of Silvia and Oliver's life together was zesty and entertaining; more so, each phase was captivating, endearing and always, always loving. The segments depicting end-of-life experiences was powerfully moving for me.
Ms. Ramone brought Wales to life for me. It was the scenes that took place in the Welsh woods with the elves, however, that I found to be most captivating. Prepare to be delighted, emotionally involved and deeply moved.
Melodie Ramone's AFTER FOREVER ENDS traces the lives of four young people from their early days at Benington, a private school, where they fight for love and honour. It is about their rites of passage to university, marriage and parenthood. The story then accelerates, much as life seems to, and takes us to some extraordinarily moving chapters as the quartet move into old age. It is without doubt the most emotionally evocative book I have read in many a year, possibly ever.
I grew to love Silvia and her sister, Lucy, and the twins they marry, Oliver and Alexander. Their lives felt real to me and came to matter to me, as did those of their children and friends.
The story is almost a model for a good life lived well and to the full. Most of us will recognise aspects of our own lives in AFTER FOREVER ENDS. Some of us may learn essential insights from the story. It may help us to make sense of our own unsolved issues.
There is one pivotal scene about two thirds of the way through the book when Silvia and Lucy throw a napkin back and forth at each other during a row, as Lucy shows Silvia just how things were regarding their father, with whom Silvia has had a difficult relationship. I found this profoundly moving as things were not easy between myself and my own father. I am sure others with find things in this road map for a life lived well that may have meaning for their lives.
The story and the characters in it are V for Vigorous. "Nothing bothers me more in this world than a person who behaves as a sheep and not as a dragon", says the elderly Sil in the absorbing first chapter.Read more ›
Without giving too much of the actual plot away, two of the character are twins, Ollie and Alex. They are almost like two halves of one person. There's Ollie the nice, sensible one (with the ability to be mischievous) and Alex the naturally mischievous, misunderstood, naughty one. Ollie is the guy you hope your daughter falls for but Alex is the one she will fall for! Alex is tough and loyal and the sort of guy you want on your side, not as your enemy. Personally speaking I adored Alex! Especially in one particular scene (but I won't spoil it by telling you what happens) suffice it to say I was very impressed with his loyalty and he made me laugh out loud!
Silvia is a wonderful, initially shy girl who really comes into her own as the story progresses. You witness her grow and mature. You gain a respect for her and for what she has been through during her life and what she continues to go through during the story and you also feel for her losses and her relationships with her Father.
Melodie Ramone has a way of expressing feelings through her writing that really do tug at your heart strings. The book is incredibly well written and Melodie's passion for her prose shines through on every page. I hope to read more from this author very soon!

Very rarely do I give up on a book but this one was so slow moving I was losing the will to live! Had to pack it in and admit defeat at 25%. Read morePublished 7 months ago by Scarlett33
Very poorly written. The story was ridiculous and was as far fetched from reality than is humanely possibly. Skipped many many pages. Read morePublished on 4 Jun. 2014 by sian
