There's a prequel to this The Gathering Dusk that introduces these characters and shows the beginning of the simmering relationship that grows between these two agents. Its clearly intense but also a really bad idea and by the book Samantha has ignored the attraction until now . Blake doesn't want to pretend they are just professional colleagues, he needs more than anything to protect Samantha but it's apparent the stubborn woman needs protecting from herself!
I thought Samantha was the character that dominated this story. She has a history of horror and pain that she keeps hidden but it's made her what she is today. A woman who can understand how a killers mind works might scare some but Blake is made of sterner stuff and desperate to save Samantha from a cruel adversary and yes even from herself. I don't think we really got into Blakes mind as much as I wanted, certainly not as much as we did other characters although his lust for Samantha was certainly fleshed out. This couple may be surrounded by atrocities and death but they sure do know how to celebrate being alive!
If tense, brutal suspense with a huge dollop of romance appeal to you then this new series will no doubt make its way to your bookshelf .Read more ›

Lots of suspense and danger with a smart, cunning and evil killer who got away and is now playing a deadly cat and mouse game with the former FBI profiler he is obsessed with.
Samantha Dark's past helped make her one of the best FBI serial killer profilers. With her new partner Blake Gamble they work to find the Georgetown University serial killer. What no one expected – especially Samantha – was for the killer to be someone very close – as in her best friend and former lover. This devastated Sam and if that wasn't enough when he escapes after a confrontation, her boss decides to throw her under the bus and suspends her.
Months later Samantha is living in a small town in Alabama hiding from her past when Blake shows up telling her the killer is at it again. When Blake and Sam were partners the attraction between them was strong but neither crossed that line and Sam walked away from him without a word thinking it was for his own good. Sam always figured the killer would come back for her but there is something a little different about this latest killer.
What neither of them knows is that the killer is close and we the reader are let in on the surprise twist but that doesn't take away from the suspense – you are literally on the edge of your seat till the very end.
This is a great series that has the added bonus of having two Harlequin Intrigue novels connected to it..
THE GATHERING DUSK - Prequel novella
AFTER THE DARK - Book 1
BEFORE THE DAWN - Available in July of 2017
INTO THE NIGHT - Book 3
Harlequin Intrigue novels that are set in the same Killer Instinct "world"
ABDUCTION - Available now (set between the prequel and the 1st book)
HUNTED - Available in June of 2017 (features character thats in 1st book)
First off, if you haven't read the prequel to this story titled "The Gathering Dusk" I would highly recommend doing so. It was a quick and riveting novella all on its own, and will give you a little more insight into the lives of Samantha, Blake, and Cameron before the events of "After the Dark" and actually sets up the plot for this novel. I'm not sure about the printed books, but that novella is included in the back of the kindle version so make sure you start there first if you haven't already read it.
AFTER THE DARK was fast paced and never seemed to slow down or lose steam. It was full of action, danger, suspense, and romance - all of which drew me in and never let me go. I adored Samantha who was well developed and even Cameron who was really twisted, but utterly intriguing and complex. Blake on the other hand could have used more fleshing out, as you don't learn much about his past or even if he has any family. His love for Samantha was never in doubt however and practically leapt off the pages. Their passion, chemistry and need for each other was evident from the start and I was left with the feeling that these two not only belonged together but that they were made just for each other. In the end it was a dark and sexy read that was never predictable and always compelling. It was by turns chilling, but also romantic and I'm very happy to have read it! I look forward to the others books in this series with bated breath, most especially Tucker's whose story sounds fascinating =)
Setting: Alabama, with a short stint in Washington D.C.
Kindle locations: 5509 total, including the prequel novella, and an excerpt... the story itself ended at 82% and location 4496.
