I discovered EW&F on the hugely underrated 'Raise' album, and have since bought everything they've ever done, so I wasn't overly excited at the prospect of owning this oddly compiled and belatedly released album. Could I have been more wrong?!!! This release has a few failings, but is the best live album EW&F have ever made - which is saying something - and I have 'Alive In 75', 'Gratitude' and the others. This is the band a couple of years and tours before the original line-up parted ways in 1983, and they are on the form of a lifetime here. I've never heard them anywhere near this good.

Along with Stevie Wonder, EW&F were the most prominent 70s funk act to borrow heavily from Brazilian music, so being one of the first US bands to play in Brazil must have been a huge deal for them. They responded by speeding up many of their songs, played here with heart-stopping precision, and accenting the Brazilian arrangements of songs, whether they originally had them or not. They are on fire from the word go, and their playing is more energetic and expansive than I've ever heard it before, improving as the album goes along. Almost every single track is a highlight, and you get a rush of excitement every time they break into a new song, but highlights would have to include the multi-movement workouts on 'Getaway', 'Magic Mind' and 'Runnin''. If you want to hear EW&F at the top of their game, playing songs that sometimes sound nothing like the album versions, then this is for you. It's a perfect example of why almost nobody copied EW&F's chops, because it was almost impossible to keep up with what they were technically capable of.

The problems with this album stem entirely from how good it is.

This is a great album of Earth Wind and Fire. I would recommend it to those who even have studio albums of them. There is some great playing on this album.

This is EWF at there peak!! With all the main members intact! If you want to hear what EWF sounds like when they were at the top of there game with all the main members (Maurice, Phillip, Verdine, Larry Dunn, Roland Bautista, Al McKay, Johnny Graham, Fred White, The Phoenix Horns, etc) in the band...this is it. Can't go wrong getting this cd I promise!!!!!!
