This book soars way above the usual 'I have survived' genre. It challenges everyone involved in the healing professions to re think their expectations of patients in their care and what is possible. Through the poignant words of Martin's wife, Sasha we are also challenged to live a beautiful life. The writer does not spare us the raw truth of he and his son's struggle and how together they fight limitation, pain and pessimism to create beauty from loss, however as other reviewers have said although tears flow, ultimately this reader was uplifted by 'After the Crash' which affirms the human will not only to survive but to thrive and claim an inheritance of joy .

I was in England Sept 2006 when this crash occured. My cousin knew Martin Spinelli's wife Sasha. When I heard of this, my heart broke for the man and wondered how the boy was doing after the crash. As soon I arrived back home to US, I looked up any update news about the boy and how he was doing because my mind kept going back and thinking about this awful day that changed everyone's life. Finally I was able to come across a website Martin put out for his son Lio Spinelli, over the years I have kept in touch and was amazed how well he was coming along. I heard that Martin wrote a book and I decided to get the book to read it to learn more about everything of what he went through, what Lio went through in life. From the moment the book arrived, I started to read it, it was a moment that I couldn't put the book down - I kept reading through the book almost straight through, the trials and tribulations of what Martin went through the loss of his wife and saving his son's life by doing what he felt was the best thing for his son. With his love and care along w/ many other family members really pulled Lio back from the brink of death. This is one WONDERFUL and HEARTFELT story not to be missed. You won't be disappointed at all w/ this book, it makes you feel you are in Martin's shoes and what he is feeling and going through. It has made me realized that life is too precious and be sure to tell your loved ones how much you love them because one day you will never know how quick a life can be changed in matter of blink of an eye! The best part for me was the ending and how beautiful it was to honor his late wife Sasha.

Martin and Lio's story carries you along with a love that shines through each page. Tears have freely flown but so have smiles and inspiration. An excellent read, but also a life lesson on fighting for a better outcome than presented. Bravo Lio.

I don't normally go for these kinds of books, having lost my own mother when I was not much older than Lio, albeit not in such horrific circumstances, and when these stories appear in the media, I feel inclined to switch off.

However, I when heard Martin's interview on the BBC World Service the other week, purely by chance, I felt moved enough to buy a copy and read it.

It is beautifully written, and more importantly, it allows the reader to see Martin and Lio - and Sasha - as people, not simply as victims, in a way that press coverage cannot, their personalities, their views and tastes, and their gifts, particularly Lio's.

What Martin said about in longer seeing himself in terms of his profession, but who he was a father to, is a poignant reminder in this status-obsessed world that there is more to people's identities than their job titles.

This is such a moving story, the belief and strength shown by a father in his determination to prove many of the medical world wrong is staggering, yet truly inspirational. I defy anyone not to be moved by this book, the bond and love between father and son is indeed something special. I do feel this book will help anyone believe that your instincts are your strongest tools, that no one knows your own child better than you and never underestimate the love a parent has for its child.
The relationship Martin and Lio has is something very beautiful, truly inspirational and this book is a must read.

I enjoyed this book - it made me cry! A very touching account of an achingly difficult situation that no one would choose to be in in a million years. Martin Spinelli's story is both inspirational and tragic. You can't help but fall in love with his son, Lio - a real survivor.
