At no point did he seek therapy for himself and as a retired psychotherapist, it was clear to me he needed to pay some attention to his own grieving problems . Overall it was a brave and helpful account of how a parents commitment and belief can achieve extraordinary results.
Beautifully written, 'After the Crash' is the account of Lio's remarkable recovery from the devastating accident that killed his mother. Not expected to survive without serious brain damage, Lio defies the odds as, with his father's unlimited support and encouragement, he passes medical milestone after milestone, overcoming every obstacle.
I was fortunate enough to meet Martin last year, and he described Lio to me as 'exceptional'. At the time I thought it was simply a fond father's biased expression. Now I know that's not the case. Lio truly is an exceptional boy. And his father is an exceptional man. Reading their story gladdens the heart and reminds us that although unimaginably dreadful things can happen, it is still possible to build something beautiful and positive from what is left. I unhesitatingly recommend it.
The command of our language that Martin has used so beautifully to describe the depth of love within this family unit is truly moving. I became part of the rehabilitation. The love ,the hurt, the anger, the despair, the elation and the strength was beautifully expressed and I will think of you often.
The relationship Martin and Lio has is something very beautiful, truly inspirational and this book is a must read.
