A brilliant written book. I love historical fiction and this one is well worth reading. Written in 4 parts, it has excitement, fear, sadness, love, and a lot about human nature. I could hardly put it down.

This begins darkly, so much so that I nearly despaired of it. But persevere and it lightens up, ending on a positive note of hope and grace. The style deliberately reflects the mood.

Enjoyed reading this book. I already knew the basic story, but it was interesting and at times gripping to view it from the point of view of the islanders.
