Drawing on classical development theory and recent theoretical advances on the connection between expanding markets and technological developments, this book reveals the critical role of the expansion of Atlantic commerce in the successful completion of England's industrialization from 1650-1850. The volume is the first detailed study of the role of overseas trade in the Industrial Revolution. It revises other explanations that have recently dominated the field and shifts the assessment of African contribution away from the debate on profits.

J.E. Inikori's book is a great work. It contains vast amounts of information culled from a huge range of sources and is a testament to the immense hard work and versatility of this historian. He comprehensively proves that the Industrial revolution depended almost entirely on the role of Atlantic trade and the slave-produced products of the Caribbean and the United States. The data is vast, impressive and unarguable. But the book is also written with humanity, hope, and it is a clear and lucid read in spite of the vast amounts of research presented. Its sheer scope and vastness in many ways stands as a testament to those enslaved Africans without which our brave new modern world would never have been built.
