About the Author

Dr. Leopold Scholtz was born in 1948 and studied at the University of Stellenbosch, the old Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg, and the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, where he was awarded his Ph.D. in history in 1978. His doctoral dissertation was a military analysis of General Christiaan de Wet s campaigns during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). After a few years as university lecturer, he went into journalism, and later became deputy editor of Die Burger, an Afrikaans morning newspaper in Cape Town. He retired as a full-time journalist in 2013 as the Europe correspondent of several South African newspapers, while based in Brussels and Delft, Netherlands. Scholtz is the author or co-author of six books, as well as 45 articles in academic journals or chapters in books. He continues as political analyst. He received infantry training at the South African Army Gymnasium in 1966, and then served with the Regiment University of Stellenbosch (Citizen Force) until 1975. He was again recruited for the Reserve Force of the post-apartheid South African National Defence Force in 1997, and served with the rank of Captain as staff officer with several headquarters.
