Product Description

Debut album by Bristol-based trio Michelson Morley led by Get The Blessing saxophonist Jake McMurchie. Melodic, exciting and beguilingly atmospheric. This debut album by Bristol-based trio Michelson Morley is melodic, exciting and beguilingly atmospheric. Led by Get The Blessing saxophonist Jake McMurchie, electronics and acoustic instruments combine with a minimalist, evolutionary approach to improvisation. At times dark, subtle and movingly beautiful, at others powerful and raw, the results are always innovative, tuneful and exciting. Scientifically aural magic. Jake McMurchie: saxophone, effects Mark Whitlam: drums, electronics Will Harris: double bass

Michelson Morley joins the growing band of British 'post jazz' outfits such as Get the Blessing. Melt Yourself Down, Sons of Kemet and Polar Bear. The trio (sax, bass drums (and real time electronics provided by the trio)) is led by Get the Blessing saxophonist Jake McMurchie. Musically, they share something with these other bands and if you are a fan of any of them (or EST/GoGo Penguin etc.) you will find much to admire in Michelson Morley. In a blind jukebox test I would have guessed the first track on the album (Rice Rage) was Melt Yourself Down with one saxophone missing., Their influences include electronica and minimalism as well as jazz and they can go from funk to ambient while still sounding like themselves. I am a fan of Get The Blessing, Polar Bear, Acoustic Ladyland. Fulborn Teversham and Melt Yourself Down. For me this record ranks alongside their best work and is possibly one of my favourite records of the year. It is jazz but with a fresh contemporary twist that means it couldn't have been recorded at any other time than now and any other place than the UK.
